I know it is not having the expected effect as I have been using it for some years now and have got to know what to expect when it is used. It does not work in any mode. Even in Auto mode.

My 40Ds built in flash fires but it has no effect on the photograph. The flash seems to be out of scync with shutter. It does fire for each photo as well as focusing. I've tried different lens. I've cleared all camera settings and the problem is still there. Need help

How do you know it isn't having an effect? What are you photographing? What camera mode/settings?

Since you have verified that all settings are the same when the flash performed correctly and now it doesn't it must be a camera defect.

Try resetting all camera settings to default, and if that doesn't work it looks like service is necessary.
