I’ve had a SL1 (100D) for years, taking decent care of it. Been using an external battery pack for a bit. One day my canon doesn’t turn on. Battery when put into camera do not stay in, possibly the spring? The little (mine is grey) tab thats holds battery in place isn’t broken. I ordered a middle chassis for 20 bucks upon thinking that was the issue, gave me a look at the skeleton though. Cant be grey tab thingie. Grey tab thingie is a plastic part that just screws into skeleton. Next test will be usb. Troubleshooting best I know how.

"A battery grip is an accessory for ..." a Canon SL1.

Is there a Canon grip for the SL1? I don't think there is. If there is not a third party grip is not recommended. If there isn't a Canon brand it means the SL1 is not designed to use one. Adding one to a camera not designed for one is not a good idea.

The camera needs a couple of things to be able to recognize that the battery is correctly inserted:

The grey tab needs to be fully engaged to secure the battery in place, and
The battery door must be in place and closed.

You have not mentioned the status of the battery door. Is that in place and closed when this issue occurs?

EOS SL1 / 100D can be used with the AC Adapter Kit ACK-E15 according to the camera instruction manual.

There is a microswitch that is activated when the battery door is correctly closed, if the camera won't power on at all even with a standard battery then it is possible the battery door or the microswitch is damaged.
