Per the canon engineers, there is a usage life on the components in the digital cameras; pc board and shutter. Guess it depends on how much you use it.

My cannon has worked perfectly for a year. Today I set up for a shoot and the video locked up when it was refocusing on the subject. Simply locked up, camera froze like a Windows computer 🙂

I turned the power switch to off, but it didn't turn it off

I removed the battery and that worked to shut off the camera

I put the battery back in and I have no power, tried 2 batteries and a USB power but the camera, well...she be dead.

...any ideas?

The camera does not get any power from USB -- that's for data-transfer and remove camera control (tethering) only.

As for the battery... is it a Canon battery (e.g. is it the battery that came with the camera) and is it charged?

Do you happen to own a different battery to test?

Also (very important) are there any non-Canon products attached to the camera (a 3rd party battery grip, a 3rd party lens, etc.) If so, please remove them and see if the camera will power up. I've seen numerous problems with 3rd party battery grips doing things like this -- and less common I've seen issues where a defective lens can cause problems for the camera.

Thank you for that input.

The camera has worked perfectly every day. Both batteries I tried are fully charged. I did have a 3rd party wireless mic but it was the same one I have used all year. I removed it, I changed the lens (only use Canon lens') and tried another memory card as well.

No power, both batteries hold green in the charger.

No other third party stuff. Nothing new for quite a while just great footage on a remarkable camera. Canon said 30 days to have it fixed if I mail it in, Geek Squad says "it's the mother board"

It may be a problem with the camera itself... I ask those questions "just in case" it can save a trip to the service center.

One more thing... there are two micro-switches that will prevent the camera from powering up. One is on the battery door. The other is on the memory card door. There are some tiny tabs that engage the micro-switches when the doors are fully closed. Can you check to make sure the doors (and tabs) are (a) undamaged and (b) able to completely close and fit correctly?
MY CAMERA IS DEAD, USING 2 DIFFERENT BATTERIES WHICH ARE NOT 3RD PARTY BATTERIES, FULLY CHARGED. I ALSO HAVE THE A/C ADAPTER. NO POWER! IVE TRIED SEVERAL YOUTUBE VIDEO SOLUTIONS. MY ONLY OTHER OPTIONS IS TO SEND IT TO CANON FOR A FEE TO BE REPAIRED OR TO TAKE THE CAMERA APART AND HOPEFULLY IT IS A SCREW THAT HAS CAME LOOSE ON THE PC OR MAINBOARD LIKE OTHER POSTS IN THES FORUMS AND AS SOME YOUTUBE VIDEOS SUGGESTED. THE 70D HAS SMALLER SCREWS AND I WILL NEED TO PURCHASE A TINY SCREW DRIVER SET JUST TO TAKE THE CAMERA APART AND SENSE I DID NOT SEE A VIDEO WITH MY SPECIFIC MODEL I REALLY DONT KNOW HOW TO TAKE THE BOTTOM OFF PROPERLY. IM STUCK

I tried everything I could to fix my canon 60d that just would not turn on. (I think it got wet or something) anyway the way I fixed it was that i read on a forum somewhere that you should toggle the ON and OFF switch like 100 times when the battery was out then when you put everything back in SLOWLY move it from OFF and ON until you see a sign of life. For me my camera turned on after many months of not working in between the OFF and ON button for a split second.. in that moment i knew i was gonna fix it! I turned the camera off again and keep toggling the ON and OFF button as fast as I could and every time I turned the camera on it was turning on closer to the actual on button. Eventually I had to secure that the ON button was being pushed to the side so the camera would remain on and after leaving it ON for a while it didnt need to be secured anymore and my camera was working! == Turn off camera, removed everything, toggle the ON and OFF button like crazy, put everything back in, slowly move the OFF button to ON and watch for signs of light, repeat several times until you do(for my it was the light from card holding that flashed orange once, nothing else was working) ==

Hey, so the update.

After finding my receipt and realizing I was 3 months over my 1-year warranty (also purchased in another country), I called Canon. They explained to me that the issue was not covered and I was outside my warranty and could send it into their repair center for a fee.

I wrote them a long letter explaining my usage and everything that'd happened as well as what I was hoping they could do (fix it for free). After a week I got an email saying that they'd accepted my job and were fixing it for free. I took a lot of time with the letter I wrote them and was so happy with their response of doing the repair at no charge. It seems my plea did not go unheard.

I'm sad to say none of the videos/blogs/forums helped with my issue. I was told by Canon to even try some of these methods I'd heard about, but nothing worked. They ended up replacing the battery connector I believe. Apologies I don't have more, but hate when people post and never reply or update again.

Well thank you so much for your reply. That is so great that they did it for free.

Hello everyone!

I'm from Ukraine and I had same issue with my camera.

It was almost new (2-3 month) and one of the time I saw err70 err80. It also freezes and start heating up... I tried everything - to take out battery, on-off.. then it shutdown completly. I couldn't turn it on.

In service they said that main board and pcb power board is dead. So I paid a lot for new parts and settings.

Now today after few month of work I get other problem, screen and shutter is not working, but camera can be turned on. autofocus and small settings screen is working , also memory card holder is not blinking at all...

In photo I'm Nikon user of d700 for many years with no problem, but I liked reviews of new autufocus of 70d and I wanted to give it a try for my video shoots... Now I'm very sorry for this. I will take it to the service one more time and will sell it next day... This camera is a peace of junk, I see a lot of problems all over internet that people have with it.

same exact thing happened to me. was even shooting video just like the original post. camera froze and image continued to show on screen even after I shut the camera off. Doesn't show anymore and camera will not power on with 2 different fully-charged batteries. I have owned the camera for 15 months now. Very disappointed...

This camera needs a recall CANON!! My less than 1 year old canon 70D that I took care and pampered so much already shows problems. Like what most of this people said, my 70D froze while I was recording a video. I sent my 70D to canon to be repaired and the problem is the PCB. It will cost me $459 to get it repaired, are you kidding me!
