Just tried to set up a repair request for this for my Canon R6 and got an estimate of $405. Why is it so expensive?

I believe they need to disassemble the camera to reach the screws from the inside.

Not to mention Canon doesn’t know how much work may be required without having the camera in front of them. To see the scale of work that is only an estimate. The price will be adjusted accordingly depending on what needs to be repaired or replaced.

I thought it had gone up to $500 now, unless you are counting on the 20% CPS Gold Membership discount. I have gone through 3 such repairs on my 5D mk III, R5 and R6. I don't even mount speedlights on the hot shoe any more (using transmitter and improvised bracket with cold shoe)

Greetings,

This is a costly repair, but honestly it's one you want Canon to perform. Peeling off the outer skin alone is cringe-worthy. Imagine if you couldn't get it back on. There are YouTube videos on the repair too. The ones where they show the complete repair, but with screws left over are also classic. This repair is best performed by Canon.

“ Did you send it in after all? What did they end up charging you? Also, how long did it take them to fix? I have the same issue with my R5. Thanks. “

For the future benefit of others with similar questions about high repair estimates. It’s a worst case estimate.

As noted above, the repair centers don’t know what is wrong until they have your camera in their hands. They evaluate your gear and send you a real world cost to repair, asking you to authorize the repair. In my past experience, ai think ai had to pay for the repair with the authorization.Your payment is the authorization. That was a decade ago.

So why is the cost so high? If all they need to do is take it apart and tighten a screw? Because that’s not what the repair center would do.

Have you ever had to replace a dead head light or tail light on your car? They don’t replace the bulb. They replace the entire light assembly. Why?

Because it’s cheaper. Replacing entire assemblies is faster, which saves in labor costs to YOU. 👈

They can charge an assembly faster than removing the assembly, taking it apart, performing electronic troubleshooting, re-assembling, and then reassembling the camera.

Andvthen there’s the savings on maintaining a spare parts inventory. The camera is built from hundreds of individual parts. But, it’s also constructed from several subassemblies.

Tracking and maintaining a spare parts inventory becomes an order of magnitude simpler and smaller.
