EOS 90D stopped working

My 90D stopped working today. Firstly the rear display looked normal but if wouldn't take a picture. Now nothing on rear display, but top display still working, whether power is on or off! Changed battery no different. Cleaned lens connectors, no different. Nothing works except top display which won't turn off.

Any suggestions please?

Has anything changed IN ANYWAY, since when it was last fully functional? That could be changing to a different battery or card, a bang or knock, getting wet: ANYTHING?

Hi Trevor, thanks for replying. I was walking in a garden on a warm sunny day. Had taken some 50 photos and was pointing at a colourful acer tree, pressed the shutter and nothing happened. Turned it off and on again, back display worked, but couldn't move the point focus and the shutter wouldn't work. Cleaned and then swapped battery. Now the only display working is on the top of the camera and it won't turn off when power is turned off. So it just stopped between taking one photo and the next.

Thanks for your prompt response.

As an initial suggestion, Icrecommend turning the camera off.

Remove the battery and lens and leave overnight. Mwanwhile make sure the battery is fully charged, and if you have access to another, do the same to that.

Then replace both battery and lens and try again.

If you get power and a display do a factory rese. If no power try the second battery.

If all that fails, and you are in the USA call 1-800-OK-CANON to talk to a technician.

Additional thought, I don't know how to do a factory reset?

Hi, overnight without power didn't work.

Had to buy a replacement today for £845. I'm on holiday for the week and couldn't be without my camera. Hopefully, when home, I can get it repaired and sell it to recoup some of the cost.

Yeah I've had my 90d return from Canon twice and I still have the same issue... Communication error between the lens and the camera. They can't duplicate it. I'm going to have to get rid of it

Well I paid the money and got the camera back from Canon UK and thankfully it has worked ever since. I kept the other one I bought, because I can't be without a working camera. Sad you'll be getting rid of yours. I'm not prepared to sacrifice a £750 lens which will only work with the 90D.

I just meant I had to get rid of this 90D. Luckily I had an old 70D in the closet that I can depend on. I'm not sure what I'll get, but it'll have to be Canon because of my $1600 lens.

I had a quite similar issue with my rather new 90d. It stopped working all of a sudden, but I found a solution for at least my issue.

On my 90d only the small top monitor kept working, the large monitor did not turn on and I was not able to change any setting like shutter speed or aperture and was not able to take any pictures. After couple of seconds after turning the camera on even the off switch did not work, the top monitor stayed on even after turning the switch off.

I tried removing the battery, lens and SD card, with the switch turned on I kept pushing the shutter button for around 10 second and left the camera for 20 minutes. But that was not enough, the error still was there.

I did the same procedure but left the camera sit for over 48 hours and that worked for me. I then set the switch to off again, put the fully charged battery in without SD card and lens and the camera switched on. I was able to make a camera reset of the settings in the menu. So far the camera is working without any issues. It has been couple of days and over 50 photos.

Don't know if 24 hours would have also been enough, but I wanted to make sure and had the time.

Maybe this information will help somebody else with a similar issue.

Apparently there was some sort of hick up in the camera software while I was taking photos, maybe I was a bit to quick with pushing different buttons or just some sort of random code malfunction. This error was stored in the RAM of the camera and for the RAM to reset all the voltage that is stored in the capacitors has to drop to zero. This needs some time. I found recommendations for periods of 24-48 hours.
