Not exactly. You need to enable “Auto Uodare” , verify the self cleaning is enabled. Finally, disable “Auto Update.”

I want to have my R7 clean the sensor when I turn the camera off. I don't want it to shake the sensor clean when I turn it on, since that slows down startup. I can find the item in the menus and select it. But the setting never seems to 'stick'. Sometimes it will last for one or even two power off/on cycles but then it reverts to shaking clean at startup. Is there something else I need to do or something I need to avoid doing to get this setting to do what I want?

Greetings @jrraines,

You can control the R7's sensor cleaning behavior here:

Canon : Product Manual : EOS R7 : Sensor Cleaning https://share.google/kb8zjff8JSyCbE4b2

The setting you modify is under cleaning automatically. 2nd option.

If this setting is not holding after power off, tell us a little bit more about the following.

Does the behavior happen regardless of the lens you're using?

Are you using any non canon brand accessories with your camera?

Do you have your shutter curtain set to close or open it shut down?

Are you using a custom shooting mode or does the behavior occur regardless of the shooting mode selected?

What firmware version are you running?

Have you performed a factory reset on your camera, both main and custom settings then retested? When troubleshooting after a reset, you will only set the date and time, the recording format and setting a password if applicable to your firmware version. Test without making any other changes except those noted above and then set the sensor cleaning to enable at shut down.

no non canon lenses. almost always using the rf100-400 f5.6-8. Generally in custom shooting mode C2, don't often switch in and out of that but if that is an issue you may be onto something. Do I need to re-register the C2 settings after I set up the sensor cleaning? Firmware is 1.7.1

Shutter is open at shutdown. Haven't done a factory reset.

For testing, make only the changes I mentioned.

Shoot in anything except custom. A hunch told me this might be a potential cause. We need to see the feature work before we can determine the cause (Likely a setting or combination of settings). As s mentioned, the feature has to be enabled when shooting in custom Shooting Mode C1~C3. However, I think it's important to see the feature work first. Thus far it's not working for you, hence my recommendation for a full reset main and custom settings. These are the steps I recommend when troubleshooting. 😉

Thanks for your help! I think I have it working the way I want now. I dialed to C2, set the sensor cleaning to power off and registered the C2 settings. I turned it on and off several times and it started without shaking the sensor clean. When I switched to C1 and turned it off and on it did clean the sensor. Then I set up C1 and C3 the way I wanted and registered settings to those and confirmed that those now worked the way I wanted. The setting has been stable for at least a half dozen power cycles.
