For some reason my post did not show up, so I have replied to myself, LOL! . I have a Canon EOS Rebel T6 that will not reset to factory. I have tried all suggestions online from Google, Canon, youtube etc, including the instructions for "hard reset", and have had no luck. When I turn on the camera, I get a screen that shows me I have auto selected. After that I cannot go anywhere except to the menu. Pressing the button to take a pic pops up the flash but doesn't take a picture. The flash goes off, but no pic. No pic on the screen unless I hit the "disp" button, and cannot make the camera view appear onscreen any other way. The camera was turned off and unused for almost a year. It is kept in a moisture free wheeled camera carry-on style case, with all the attachments and lenses. I'm 81 years old and this has me quite confused, LOL! Thanks for any help.

Jenni

OMG, Rick! That is exactly what I did, because I didn't realise the camera would be out of action so long. (broken hip, wheelchair, blah, blah....) It appeared to charge ok when I put it on charge this morning, went from yellow to green in about an hour. I'll have a new battery sent in case that was the problem. No spare, sadly. Thanks for your input.

Jenni

Jenni,

Rick's suggestion of trying a fully charged fresh battery is a good one.

Usually, the flash will pop up if the camera senses a picture that is so dark that a flash is needed. Have you tried to take a picture outside on a nice sunny day?

Your comment about the "camera view" makes me wonder if you are trying to use "Live View".

The battery is suspect at this point. I'd also take a look at the battery compartment with a flashlight. You'll want to look for corrosion. Hopefully none is present. Charge the new battery fully before testing. Hopefully that'll be it.

Jenni,

If you haven't done so yet, I'd strongly encourage you to download a copy of your camera manual.

You can find a copy here:

https://www.usa.canon.com/support/p/eos-rebel-t6#idReference%3Dmanuals

It's about halfway down the page. It will be in pdf format, but using a pdf reader like Adobe Acrobat, you can search for answers to specific questions. It will also explain what all the buttons are and what they are used for.

If you hit your menu button and go to the second red icon, it addresses Shooting in Live View. You can either Enable or Disable it.

Once you Enable it, you can shoot in Live View by pressing the little white button just to the right of your Viewfinder.

Hi Steve, I checked and it is disabled. I'm wondering if I show you all pictures of my settings, if anyone would see something I've missed. I've gone through all my menus and simply cannot see what I've done. The battery is ordered, but Amazon takes 3 weeks to get to Belize. It goes to a shipper first. They don't mail direct, due to the nature of the item.

Jenni

Yes, I have a charger, and the battery went to green when I charged it yesterday. I did notice the charger and battery were quite hot while plugged in.

Jenni,

Two things. I also have a T6.

1) If you really want to clear your settings and start from scratch, that setting is in your Menu - the last wrench menu. They are in yellow, and there are three of them. It's the last one to your right and down towards the bottom. You will need to clear all the settings and also clear all the Custom Functions. That really will take you back to back to the beginning.

2) You mentioned that when you turn on your camera, it tells you that you are in Auto. In Auto, your camera is going to decide what aperture and shutter speed you use. It will also decide whether to raise the flash or not.

Try turning your Mode dial to something like Av, and with your main Control wheel, pick an average aperture like f/8 or f/5.6 (For some reason, my T6 seems to like f/5.6/ I think it's a nice average or something).

Your camera will pick the shutter speed automatically, and if you choose an Auto ISO, it will set your ISO too.

That should stop your camera from raising the flash automatically.

Have done all the "clear settings, clear custom setting, etc, numerous times.Tried the AV. The camera took a couple of pics.

Jenni,

The screen you showed is good. It's just an information screen that tells you how your camera is set up prior to taking a picture using your Viewfinder. It tells me that you are in Aperture Priority Mode with an aperture set at f/5.6.

Your ISO i set to Auto. The long box with the numbers is your light meter. Most of the time, by adjusting one or more settings, most people try to get that meter reading right in the center at 0 to get a good exposure.

The letter A is your Picture Style, If you hit your Q button, and using your arrow keys, you can move to that box and hitting your Set button, change that to maybe S for Standard.

You are using AWB, or Auto White Balance. You can leave that, or change it to Daylight.or Cloudy for cloudy conditions. The next box is for auto correcting image brightness and contrast. I have mine set to off. Then you have your flash button. If you hit your Q button, and move to that box and hit your Set button, your flash will pop up.

You are in One Shot, which a lot of people use for stationary subjects. This means that you have to hit your focus button each time you want to take a picture. I personally prefer using Servo, which means that the camera will continuously focus as long as you hold that focus button down. It's helpful for moving subjects, where you don't want to constantly press and release and press your focus button again and again.

You are taking one picture at a time instead of bursts of shots, and are in Evaluative metering mode, which meters an average of the entire scene instead of Spot Metering, which only meters for a small part of your scene. Your picture is AL, which is the best resolution for your 18 megapixel sensor.

Your battery is good, and it looks like your have room for 1729 more pictures on your memory card.

I think that the strip of information that came up on the left hand side of your screen is basically the same kind of information that you see on this screen, but for shooting in Live View. It's when you hit your Q button while you are in Live View. That's just a guess on my part.

When you are done making any changes you want, if you hit your Q button again, it will take you out of the setting changes mode and you'll be set to take a picture.

As far as downloading your manual, it has saved me a lot of time in the past. Using the search function, you can jump to a section of the manual that deals with a specific area that I want an answer to without having to flip back and forth in the manual. Those paper manuals are a pain..

I recommend a thorough review of your product manual while while you wait for your new battery to arrive.
