EOS R6 Mark II Menu button not working right

Yesterday at a kids sporting event, my R6ii Menu button began to only work when depressed and held down. When the menu button was released, the screen went to a black screen w/ "Spot AF" at the top and AF functions listed across the bottom although AF could not be changed from this screen. I really need to get the Menu button to open the Menu and keep the Menu open when the button is released. I know of no settings that I intentionally changed to cause this to happen. Can anyone please help???

One option to try is resetting the camera.

Waddizzle, one more bit of info.....after messing around with settings, google searches, etc for most of yesterday afternoon, the menu screen finally stayed open after releasing the menu button. So, I turned camera off and went to bed. This morning, turned the camera on to find the problem had returned and the menu would only display when the menu button was pressed and held down...

“ With menu button pressed, shutter release takes a photo. With menu button released and the AF screen showing, shutter release takes a photo. “

I apologize. It was not my intention for you to press both buttons at the same time. Make sure the camera is not in video mode.

If you’re able to reset the camera as John suggested, then I recommend doing so. If not, remove any lens, memory card, battery, and any other accessories, as including mount adapters. Put a body cap on the camera.

Close up the camera. Card and battery slots closed securely. Here’s a procedure that seemed to reset many Canon DSLRs back to factory defaults.

Turn ON the power switch. Fully press the shutter button. Keep it fully pressed for at least 10-12 seconds. Release the button. Turn the power switch to OFF.

Replace the battery only. Turn the camera ON. What do you see on the rear display?

I greatly appreciate the input. Based on some google info, I have removed the battery for 20 minutes and put it back in. Currently, the menu button is working correctly. However, I'm not overly confident that it will remain. If it doesn't I will reset the camera per the above process.

Great to be optimistic. Sounds like you are realistic as well. I suggest you perform a full reset of your main and custom settings as @jrhoffman75 and @Waddizzle recommended to rule out a hardware issue.

Although the R6 MkII doesn't allow you to backup settings, I often encourage users to explore the menus in their camera to increase their familiarity with its features. Obviously, if you're in the middle of a vacation or an important shoot it might not be the right time to reset, but you should never be afraid to reset your camera. If it seems daunting now, it won't be after you do it once or twice. It a great way to rule out hardware issues or help identify reasons for unexpected behavior.

It doesn't really sound like it, but it could be that you are inadvertently activating the viewfinder sensor, which turns the screen off.
