topic EOS R8 overheats after 60-120 seconds in EOS DSLR & Mirrorless Cameras

Hello,

I've been using my R8 for years for both photo and video without any issues. The other day I started filming my daughter singing at school (as I have many times before) and after a few seconds the camera heat warning went from 0 to overheat almost instantly. I got the "Movie recording stopped" screen followed by the message "Movie recording has been stopped automatically. Slow card write speed." I have filmed for over 20mins continuously and several long clips back-to-back without encountering this error. I formatted the card but got the same result. I was recording in 4k 29.97 so I changed it to 1080 29.97 and got a couple of minutes before the same thing happened. I took the camera home and tried more formatting and other cards as well as updating to the newest 1.6 firmware. The most I can get is 1-2min of recording before the same thing happens. The SD Card is warm if I remove immediately following the error. Please help!

R8 recording in 4K 29.97p Standard IPB

RF 28-70 2.8 IS STM

Original SD Card SanDisk Extreme PRO v90 128GB later tried Delkin Devices Prime v60 128GB and a SanDisk Extreme PRO v30 128GB

Canon LP-E17 batteries

Sorry to hear about your issue. Sounds like you have checked all the trouble shooting boxes. Contact Canon 1-800-OK-CANON.

I've not had that problem because I don't do video, but I will say that my R8 is a VERY glitchy camera. If the battery on mine gets low (like below half charge), it sometimes forgets how to autofocus or it will autofocus but not shoot. It will also sometimes lose connection with the lens. Pop in a fully charged battery and an exorcism is performed. It's so annoying that I've considered getting a battery grip with two batteries, but haven't gone there yet.

Meanwhile, my R100 can stay fully functional down to the last drop of battery power. It NEVER has a communication error with any of my RF lenes nor has it done any other shenanigans on low battery.

I'm not as satisfied as I'd like to be with my R8. From day one it has been a battery eater.

I wish they'd do an R200 i.e. an R100 with a full-frame sensor.
