R6 Mark III randomly, and intermittently, takes two exposures with one press of the shutter button.

Hoping someone may have experienced this, or might think of something I am overlooking. This issue only recently began, totally out of the blue. Camera is only 4 months old, and has latest (1.0.2) firmware. Drive mode is set to single shot. Shutter mode is primarily set to EFC. Occasionally ES. Virtually never use MS. I have double-checked every setting I can think of, that might cause multiple exposures. AEB, HDR, multiple-exposure, etc... All are set to OFF. At this point I am at a total loss. Not sure what, if anything, I may be overlooking. I have gone through the Q menu, and all the menu pages except for WiFi, Playback and Movie settings. (Can't imagine anything in there that might be relevant.)

As I said, this is totally random and intermittent. I can find no pattern or circumstance that might be causing this to occur. However, while I was searching the internet for answers, I did read one particularly strange suggestion. Someone offered the possibility that the R6 Mk 3 shutter button was so sensitive in ES mode, that a user might inadvertently cause 2 exposures, even though they "thought" they only pressed the shutter button once. Seems implausible, but at this point I'm willing to entertain just about anything. Ever heard of anything like that?

Sorry to hear about your experience. Do you have any Noise Reduction settings enabled?

Some of the in-camera NR and Image Correction settings can cause the camera to capture a second exposure to use as baseline for noise reduction

Thanks for your reply. Actually, I’ve not ever heard that before. However, I do have lens corrections turned on. But no noise reduction.

Capturing a blank frame is a common technique used in astrophotography to reduce noise in long exposures.

Help someone to help you. Tell us about your settings, lens, etc. How can we reproduce this issue.

Thanks again. I’m not into Astro photography. Perhaps that is why I am unfamiliar. Be that as it may…

I use the 24-105mm F4 L, 70-200mm F4 L and 100mm F2.8 L Macro. AEB off, evaluative metering mode, single shooting drive mode, EFC and ES shutter mode, AWB, AF servo mode, auto servo af, pre-cont. shooting off, spot AF area. Beyond that, you’ll need to tell me what other settings you might consider relevant. I’ll be happy to provide.

"How can we reproduce this issue." That's part of the problem. I don't know how to reproduce this issue. It is so random and intermittent, that I can't find a common circumstance to reproduce it. It just happens.

Two things came to mind:

1) Do you get two actual pictures, or do you just hear the shutter button go off twice? If that's the case, check to see if you have your mirror lockup enabled.

2) Do you have a remote cable release? Plug that in and see if the behavior is repeated. If it's not, maybe your shutter release button is sticking for some reason.

The first thing I noticed about my R5 and R6 series (both I & II) is how sensitive the shutter button is. Not so much on the R7, but the other 4 are really touchy. I got used to it and came to like it being sensitive. I researched it at first and others said to use BBF, but for me, I like the shutter button on the MILC's. Although I did use BBF on my DSLR's, my R's work the way I want and no fiddling with buttons... Win Win!

I have used BBF since the early days with my R7. That’s the only way I fly now. You are now the second person that has mentioned the “sensitivity” of the R6’s shutter button. Could it really be as simple as that? Might I be inadvertently engaging the shutter button twice, without realizing it. At this point, I’m willing to entertain just about anything. Over the next few days, I will try to be ultra aware of how I am pressing the shutter button. To see if that could be it.

(BTW - I lived in Ft. Lauderdale many moons ago.)

So, here is the resolution. Figured all you guys, who took the time to try and help, deserve to know where things stand. Seems the two people who suggested “user error”, as regards to a very sensitive shutter button (relative to the R7, my previous camera) were correct after all.

Canon support tech suggested I reset camera to factory settings and see if problem persists. I did. And it does. So, as I had stated in a previous post, I was determined be very diligent and hyper-aware of how I am pressing the shutter button. I now agree that the R63 shutter button is way more sensitive than the R7. And, apparently, I had become quite lazy and haphazard with my shutter finger. As long as I remained focused on a steady and deliberate press, the result is always just a single exposure. Problem solved. It was me.
