I'm using a Canon R7 and consider myself to be an amateur sports photographer. I have been taking pics of local high school and club indoor volleyball teams. While taking pics, I very often use the flip screen to frame and take my shots when the subject is still. When the action is more intense, I use the viewfinder to track them better. Sometimes my nose will touch the screen and change the focal point. I've read blogs suggesting to just flip the screen over but that doesn't work for me since a lot of my pics come from using the screen to frame my shots. Does anyone know how to shut off the touch AF feature so my nose doesn't mess up my next shot without completely disabling the touch features of the screen?

TIA!

Iankeith1,

One option is to configure the Multi-function lock button. You can set this up so that you can disable the touch screen when you press the Lock button. You can choose which functions are disabled when you press the Lock button. One of them appears to be the touch screen.

I have a T8i, and the procedure for doing this is in the Custom Functions settings, (the Wrench Menus) page 4.

It looks like your multi-function lock settings for the R7 are in the Wrench menu page 5.

That way, you can frame your shot and focus, and then hit your Lock button, and will disable your touch screen until you hit the Lock button again.

I think you want to disable this:

if you’re swtchibg between the rear display and the viewfinder, then I suggest creating a custom shooting mode that has the touch screen completely disabled. On Wrench Menu 4, set Touch Control to disabled.

If you only want to disable the touch AF, go to AF screen 4, set Touch and Drag AF settings to OFF, but this only turns that off. If your nose it hitting the screen it could also hit something else maybe, so Waddizzle's suggestion of disabling Touch Control may be a better option.

Hi stevet1!!

I think this will be a good solution! I'll be going to a 3 day volleyball tournament this week and I will definitely try using the lock button as an option. I appreciate your help.

Thx!! iankeith1

Hi Waddizzle,

OK... I set the Touch Control to disabled. When I'm in one of my custom shooting settings (C1 or C2), when I touch the screen the focal point changes so it's still responding to the touch. When I'm in Manual mode, the screen does not respond to touch. I'll keep it in Manual mode the tournament this week to see how it goes. Thanks for your help, I appreciate your time!!

iankeith1

Hi TomRamsey,

I'm going to try using the lock button as suggested by stevet1 as well as disabling the Touch Control as suggested by Waddizzle. I think those 2 things, as well as keeping the camera on Manual, might be the ticket. I'll know more while I'm at a volleyball tournament this week Thanks for your input, I appreciate your time!

Iankeith1

—————————-

Custom shooting modes must be “updated” to retain settings changes. The “Auto Update” setting is disabled by default, which is the preferred setting.

A custom shooting mode is a preset camera configuration. For example , I have C1 set for One Shot AF, Single Shot drive mode, 1-pt AF point, Whole Area Tracking disabled, and other unique settings. I like to think of it as “bird on a branch” mode.

I have C2 preset very differently. It uses Servo AF, Continuous drive mode, 1-pt Surround AF point, Whole Area Tracking enabled, and other unique settings. I think of it as “bird in flught” mode.

I am certain that if you switch to your custom shooting mode, Touch Control will be enabled.
