EOS R6 Mark II AF frame is not focusing on a subject’s eyes

I'm having trouble with my EOS R6 Mark II Camera is that the AF frame is not focusing on a subject’s eyes. There’s a person clearly in the frame, and squares and other types of focusing are going on all over the frame, but the camera often doesn’t detect the eyes, certainly not immediately.

I can post more metadata but I'm in One Shot mode, aperture, shutter speed, or program priority. (It doesn't matter.) I've been doing more indoor shots than outdoors in the past few months.

Hi @WSC33 welcome to the forums. What lens are you using. Are you adapting older EF/ EF-S lenses. If so what mount adapter are you using. 3rd Party mount adapters cause all sorts of problems. Or are you using native RF lenses. Just know not every EF lens released can utilize all features found in R series cameras. Especially older EF lenses. Please provide the Full names of all lenses that are being used. That includes the mount adapter if one is being used. I have example pictures below to help you identify your lens model.

Do you have eye-detection enabled in your menu?

To activate eye tracking on your Canon R6 Mark II:

Menu Navigation:
- Press the Menu button on the camera.
- Navigate to the AF (Autofocus) menu tab.
Select AF Operation:
- Choose “Servo AF” for continuous focus tracking.
- Choose “One-Shot AF” for single focus.
Enable Eye Detection:
- Navigate to “Eye Detection AF” and set it to “Enable.”
- Ensure “Face + Tracking” is selected as the AF method.
Shooting:
- Half-press the shutter button to activate focus.
- The camera will detect and track the subject’s eyes automatically.

If you are referring to One Shot AF mode, then using that mode to track doesn’t work You want to use Servo AF Mode to track moving subjects.

Also, if your subject is too small in the viewfinder, then AF Eye and Subject Tracking may not work, at all.

Far more information about your camera settings, lens in use, and most importantly the shooting conditions.

It was recommended to me by a Canon rep to set “AF Operation to “One Shot”. Would it help my issue to be on “Servo?”

Yes, I think I have eye-detection set correctly. Please verify my settings:

Eye detection is set on “Auto”. I don’t see an “AF Method” option nor “Face + tracking”.

AF Area is “Whole area AF”.

Whole area tracking Servo AF: On

Subject to detect: Auto

Switching tracked subjects: 1

My subjects are typically stationary, but I’ll remember to switch if they’re moving. My subjects are large in the viewfinder. I too, typically shoot aperture, shutter speed, or program priority.

If you want to track a subject’s eyes, then use Servo AF, not One Shot AF nor AI Servo. as I noted above, and as you are discovering, there is no subject tracking in One Shot AF mode. AI Servo switches between One Shot and Servo. It’s not a good mode for tracking subjects.

Thanks. I will try that. I assumed that One Shot AF would find a stationary subject fine but struggle w/ moving ones, such as a sports event or something. I changed settings. Thanks again.
