topic EOS R7 (and possibly other cameras) Display Simulation: Exposure+DOF to help AF? in EOS DSLR & Mirrorless Cameras

On the R7 (firmware 1.7.1), the Display Simulation setting has three options. The one I am curious about is Exposure+DOF. The comments on the net seem to believe that setting this to Exposure+DOF helps with the autofocus. I guess I need to “unlearn” lessons from DSLRs? With a reduced aperture, the autofocus on DSLRs would struggle more. I guess since the focusing is being done from the image sensor, different rules apply?

How do folks here have it set and what have you been your experiences with this setting?

It stops down the lens, and boosts the brightness to simulate the exposure.

It has nothing to do with autofocus and my hinder it. The lens should be wide open for autofocus. But different rules do apply, R cameras can focus at much smaller apertures than DSLR's.

In fact the camera locks out AF when the depth of field preview button is pressed.

But they don't need too. They can focus at very small apertures past f/8, though I am pretty sure focus accuracy goes up as the depth of field goes down.

@kvbarkley in low lighting focus accuracy goes down if the lens stops down to the desired aperture for focus. That’s why the camera focuses wide open for as much light and contrast as possible. Also the camera wouldn’t need an AF Assist Beam as much later.
