I can confirm, the issue is likely the battery. I teach HS photography and have about a dozen r100's. They are awesome cameras! I came across this error today for the first time in 2 years. The issue seems to have stemmed from charging the Canon battery in an off-brand/ generic charger. When I moved the battery to two other r-100's, I got the same error. I eventually changed the battery to a R-50 and the problem went away. I let the battery drain for a few minutes by recording a video. Then I put it back on the Canon charger, let it charge up or a few minutes, and then it worked in multiple Canon R-100's. So I guess my suggestion is to find another camera that takes the r100- LP-e17 battery and try it there- drain it a bit then charge it with the Canon charger. (the t8i, r50, and 100 take the same batteries, likely others as well. You could also try to take it to a camera shop where they can put it in another camera to drain it a bit so it takes some charge. The good news, its that its the battery, not the camera! Best of luck to all of you!-

Hello!! I had gotten a Cannon EOS r100 for Christmas this past year, today I pick it up and try to use it and it says “Overheated! Shutting down.“ I waited a while, tried it again. Nothing

six hours later after work, I tried it again when I got home still nothing! Still says “Overheated! Shutting down.”

what do I do? Please and thank you

Hi Logan15k,

Most Canon cameras have an overheat detection sensor that protects the camera from overheating. However it shouldn't be activating when you first turn the camera on.

Let's try some troubleshooting. First confirm that you are using the original Canon battery that came with your camera? Please ensure it is fully charged. Please remove any storage media from the camera. Please remove the lens from the body and replace the body cap.

Now try powering up the camera. If it goes immediately to overheating again, the device will require service. Your camera has a 1-year warranty from Canon.

Start by registering the device in your MyCanon account, then select Repair. You will be guided through the process of packaging and returning your camera to Canon. Although summer is a busy time of year, I'm sure they'll get it back to you quickly.

My experience with the R100 has been flawless. Shadowsports' ideas are pretty on point for trouble shooting. I would also ask how the camera has been stored. Has it ever been dropped/fallen off a shelf? It definitely is malfunctioning. Let us know how the repair goes.

I recently encountered this error on an R100, and the cause was the battery. The camera was not in use prior to the error showing up - it was being turned on "cold". The error did not occur when I switched to a different battery pack, but showed the same behavior with the "problem" battery even after a day. I have a feeling something in the battery circuitry, like an internal fuse or something, was faulty. For others - if you get this error on startup and have another battery at hand, try swapping the battery.
