Why Canon removed the ability to save in the CR3 format can only be speculated about. Perhaps it had something to do with C2PA Content Credentials that Canon joined in January 2023? See this about what happened to Nikon with multi-exposure and NEF https://www.dpreview.com/forums/threads/my-z6-iii-c2pa-deep-dive.4814940/#post-68425009

Anyway, some reflections regarding my R6. The multi-exposed CR3 file is already white-balanced, and highlights clip much earlier than the R6 normally does. A better solution, if you want to preserve highlights, is to combine the images later on the computer. Here are nine RAW files that I have combined both afterwards and in-camera (Average mode). Take a look at the standard deviation in the blue and red colour channels relative to the green colour channels. Compare between the images. This is probably a result of the baked-in white balance.

What is the rationale for Canon changing this? I would think they would encourage creativity rather than restrict it. I am glad that my R6mii allows me to finally use my RF24-240 to take multiple exposures, but the fact that I now only have a .jpg to process afterwards almost makes it useless. Is there any hope that Canon will change this or a way to let Canon know that it was a poor move to change it? #R6mii #multipleexposure

Thank you for your response. However as “expected” as the behavior is, it is a change from the behavior of the original R5 and R6 and is a downgrade in quality. It is useless for dedicated multiple exposure photographers to have their in-camera output be a .jpg and takes away much of the versatility of the camera for that use. My question was more to ask how can I contact canon to register my displeasure at this. No one buys a camera of any quality and expects that the functions will be downgraded not upgraded.
thank you again for your quick response

Ms2thdr,

I could be wrong, but it seems like with Canon, any time you combine images the resulting output is a jpg.

At least , on my camera, a T8i, if I use the "special modes" (Highlight Back Control or HDR) the resulting output is a jog.

Because a multiple exposure is a type of print. A JPG file is a digital print. A RAW file is a digital equivalent of a film negative.

Multiple exposures? Or HDR shots? I am not sure what type of end result the OP Is referring to. I don’t have my 6D anymore, and never tried to make double / multiple exposures with it. My recollection is that the end result was always a JPG “print”.

While you cannot merge existing image files into a single multiple exposure, you can select an existing image file to be merged with a photo that you are about to capture.

Yes, that is true for many things, especially HDR, but it wasn't true for multiple exposures. Up until the R6ii multiple exposures were recorded as .tif files. I have hundreds of them to attest to that. It's just that this is a big change and I don't understand the rationale behind it.

So if this is the case, then why was it never like this before? And a multiple exposure is definitely not like a print. If you've never done a multiple exposure in camera you would think that, but for those of us who have we know that they need contrast, color and other changes to make them look right. Just like a regular image that is shot in RAW. I'm not asking that it is saved in RAW, that would be silly, I'm just saying that it is a change and for the worse not the better.

And that's yet another thing. Before this change you could select RAW files as a base image for the Multiple exposure, now you can only choose .jpg. Which is absolutely crazy for those of us who don't ever create images in .jpg in camera. (Unless we are being forced to).

I have already explained why. The end result is a digital print. Just because I have no interest in capturing does not mean I do not understand how multiple exposures work. I also noted that it was not clear what type of multiple exposure you were creating.

The end result of multiple exposure is an image with undefined EXIF data. You can create a multiple exposure image from an existing file and one you are about to capture. The two files could have different times/dates, lens, exposure, WB, AEC, etc. Tell me,, what data should go in the EXIF?

The screenshot is about using an existing file on the memory card. You could take a RAW photo today. Turn off the camera. Go capture another RAW photo the next day in a different location using a different lens, exposure, etc.

If the WB is baked in, then the file is no longer a RAW file.

I am going to drop this now since you don't seem to be understanding the point I am making. It's not about the EXIF data, apparently, that wasn't a problem in the DSLR cameras and the early Mirrorless cameras, since they recorded the multiple exposure images as RAW files. The issue *is* about the fact that they CHANGED it. You seem to be stuck on the fact that they can't do it when they did it very well for many years going back as far as the 5D series. Here are screenshots from the user manuals so you can see that the R5 saved the images as RAW even with 2 or up to 9 images worth of EXIF data in it, and the R6Mii can only save it as JPG. In addition the R5 (and original R6 and all the 5D series) could use RAW images as the base image where as all the current cameras can not. I have been doing photography as long as you, maybe I don't participate in forums like this but I do know what I'm talking about. All I'm saying here is that it is a degradation in the camera's usefulness for those of us who don't just take single images and there doesn't seem to be a good reason!

The R5 User ManualThe R6 MII user ManualThe R5 User ManualThe R6 user manaul
