topic EOS R5 Mark II autofocus randomly seems to lose connection and switches to manual focus in EOS DSLR & Mirrorless Cameras

Autofocus works correctly 95% of the time, but occasionally seems to lose contact with lens and switches to manual focus. RF 24-70 is my main lens (although also have had similar issues with two EF lens using Canon EF-EOS R adaptor - shows me that issue is with camera, not lens).

Camera and RF lens is about 15 months old and seems to have gotten worse over time.

Firmware is the latest, version 1.2.0

Gently cleaned the lens, camera contacts several times.

Reset to factory default to ensure no odd AF settings causing issue.

Turn camera off and on, remove battery temporarily sometimes works but AF often comes back without any changes on my part.

Is this something a new firmware update might correct?

Canon R5 Mark II

Canon RF 24-70 f/2.8 IS USM

Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8

Canon EF 300 f/2.8 IS

As long as your mount is tight, this seems like a service issue.

Greetings,

This is an interesting report since it's not physically possible for your RF 24- 70 f2.8 to "switch" itself from AF to Manual mode on its own.

As of this posting v1.2.0 is the latest firmware available for the R5 mark II. Note, firmware updates should not be performed on a body which is malfunctioning, or exhibiting unexpected behavior as it can mask or further compound your issues.

If you have any accessories connected to your camera besides a Canon EF to EOS R adapter, they should be removed during troubleshooting.

Since you have performed a factory reset and hopefully retested without making any modifications except for setting PIN, time and date, I suggest you reach out to Canon support.

MyCanon

https://myprofile.americas.canon.com/us/signin

Register your body first in the MyCanon portal, then call support.

My colleagues, those guys are wise! I would only add to make sure that all wireless communications are disabled if you are not using them.
