EOS Rebel T7, "no images" on screen error

I have been working all day on my Rebel T7, trying to figure out why my camera says "no images". Purchased 8 mths ago, I have tried EVERYTHING. I transferred images to my Mac from an old SD card, clicked "delete after import". I did not realise it deleted off my card as well (Its fine they saved to my Mac). Next, I put an SD card that I've used since 5/2025-current day & now that one won't show any pics on my Canon camera. It was fine until today. I then tried to export pics BACK onto both of those cards to test them (the old and current card), inserted in my camera & neither will show pics on my camera as before! I have researched & even used tips from Canon Chat. I decided to buy a new SDXC today (reg. size, video, 10# 64gb). I formatted in my Mac & Canon. Yes, I am able take NEW pictures on the 2 old SD's and the newly purchased just fine. Yes, I am able to download them to my Mac (NOT clicking "delete after..."). I am also able to EXPORT from Mac to SD on ANY of the 3 SD cards, yet NONE of the photos will show on my Canon Camera AFTER I export back into the card...I have exported to the exact files DCIM & 100 Canon, I have formatted 2 of the 3, I have checked my settings, and finally cleared settings and it STILL will not show photos that are NOT edited that I took this very moment and downloaded to my Mac & back onto my SD. PLEASE help I know it's confusing but I have NO idea what happened from yesterday to today.

SraPerez43,

I guess I'd have three questions:

1) Is it possible that in the process of exporting them back to the card, the process itself is changing the file name?; and,

2) If you take the card back out again and insert it into the computer, do the files show up?; and,

3) Have you tried copying instead of exporting?

Copying files back onto a camera is not advisable under any circumstance. Cameras don't like that. They may not be readable. Why are you trying to go back & forth so much?

Take pictures, move/copy them to your computer however you want, and format the card in-camera.

64 GB cards may work according to the camera manual, but it's not reliable. Stick to 32 GB maximum size.

I don't think the camera cares one way or the other. It is certainly possible and does no harm. Why you want them back there is another question. To ensure the camera recognizes them, the images must be in a supported format and follow the original naming convention. They need to be in the correct folder. I suspect your Mac altered the naming convention or modified the file format or you did with or without knowing.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I am truly frustrated. Yes, I know it seems like a lot of back & forth but it stunned me that all of a sudden neither of my 2 older cards would not show my photos when toggling thru on my camera as it was doing. I googled whether a Mac will change file during transfer and it states no, that it transfers exact byte by byte. I also made sure to add photos to the 100Canon file on my Mac as well as the DCIM just to show it in both. Yes, I can see the photos on my Mac (old & new pics) just not when I toggle on my Canon. I can only see current pictures taken today and I assume future ones on my Canon. I will try copy button vs export...Thank you.

Thank you for taking your time to reply. I know it sounds like a lot of bk & forth. It just surprised me that I was not able to add see them on my SD card once put them back. Even when I tested a few in the exact folder my Canon shows which is 100Canon. I was able to see them all before and now can only view them on my Mac....I will be putting my oldest photos back onto the SD cards to free up Mac space but it wa just so odd not to be able to toggle thru them on my Canon....New pictures are showing. And why, may I ask do you find 64 GB unreliable. Just for me to reference this knowledge when purchasing in the future. Thank you!

Thank you for taking your time to reply. It surprised me not to be able see my photos in my SD card when I toggled thru on my camera. I will be putting some of the oldest pics back on an SD card to free up space on my Mac. Luckily, I can see them on my SD card when I insert on my Mac. I guess that's the good thing. New pictures I take on my camera are visible so I guess going forward I will be extremely careful because something changed like you said whether I realised it or not. Thank you again.

@SraPerez43 from personal experience and in the community that lineup of cameras has problems with that size SD Card capacity. Even though the manual states that its "compatible" its not. Cards of that capacity cause the camera to hang or lock up for no reason. Once the card is replaced with a smaller capacity card the problems all go away. When you format an SD Card in your camera it creates a file and folder structure the camera can handle. Your camera is NOT designed to use Apple/ Mac's folder system because it sets up a different folder system than is what's compatible with the camera. Also DO NOT move pictures from your computer to the SD Card. This causes problems with the SD Card's formatting. This can cause an issue with the camera reading the information on it. Since the camera doesn't use Apple/ Mac's formatting. Also stick with SDHC SD Cards (32GB or smaller) avoid SDXC SD Cards (64GB or larger). These cause all sorts of problems with your particular camera. Higher end cameras don't have that problem.

Sorry for a second post so quick but this is most likely the challenge.

Images are written and the structure of how they are saved includes the DCIM folder structure. If the folders and the images contained in those folders are maintained then you have the necessary file integrity of both and you should be able to open in the camera. If they are not maintained you will not be able to read the image files. The image files can't simply be floating on the SD card, they must be in a file folder.

The questions above still apply, post production will cause a challenge as well.

SraPerez43 while reading about image transfers on a Mac the process is pretty specific and formatting to an Apple format appears to be vital. Without the format files can become corrupt and not display properly.

Next time you shoot add an image or two into your sub-folder under the DCIM directory on the SD Card. It has to be the file folder with images in it, in the example above the 100CANON sub-folder. Check if you can see them in camera please.

This could also be an obscure Mac thing. Macs put hidden files that start with "." when it writes to a disk. These "dot files" contain meta data (like the file icon and where to put it on the screen). There are ways to see these - plugging into a PC is probably the easiest - but you might just want to run dot-clean to remove them:

https://ss64.com/mac/dot_clean.html

Understand completely. but I might suggest you get some thumb sticks instead of SD for photo storage. When I was in full wedding photographer mode I delivered the photos ot my clients on thumb sticks. The big advantage is they are useable almost anywhere since most all computers had a USB slot but a lot don't have SD slots.

BTW, not necessarily subject matter but It was a big hurdle for me since in the beginning to switch to DVD and later to thumbsticks because I made beautiful wedding albums for the couple. Oh, well, things change.

You're getting advice from some extremely knowledgeable folks. Key takeaway... copying files back and forth to an SD card is not recommended. It becomes even more complex if you are using subfolders. I'm not saying it can't be done but you may experience unexpected behavior if done improperly. The storage media in your camera should not be used as a repository for long-term storage. Use your phone for that. It's backed up to the cloud and also gives you the ability to share and post photos easily.

Correct. It doesn’t work. Stop trying.

Is the card still in the camera when you try to write files to it? That doesn’t work, either.

The advice to stick to only using SDHC cards, 32 GB or smaller, is sound advice. Some camera models just don’t work well with the higher capacity SDXC cards.
