I have removed the lens, so just the body.
Current Firmware version 1.3.2
Downloaded version 1.7.1 from Canon Europe. Extracted "EOSR7171.FIR" from zip.
SD card is Lexar professional 256gb 1800x v60.
Only 1 SD card fitted in slot 1.
Formatted with low level ticked in the camera.
Removed SD from camera, using Windows 11 PC with SD card reader, copied Extracted "EOSR7171.FIR" to the root of the SD card.

Battery is original Canon LP-E6NH, battery is fully charged.
Mode selector is set to "P"

Selected Update firmware in camera menu, shows:
"Firmware update program"
"Update Firmware?"
"1.3.2 -> 1.7.1"
"EOSR7171.FIR"
CANCEL OK

I press the Q/SET button on the camera.
The screen goes blank, then I can hear something like the shutter operating, then immediately back to the Info display.
Firmware still 1.3.2, camera still works.

I have read the instructions, looked at numerous U tube videos, what am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Have you attempt to delete the current version 1.7.1 for your PC and downloading and unzipping a fresh version?

All the steps look good and should be repeated especially formatting the card when trying the fresh download.

The original may have been corrupted during down or unzipping. It's worth a try....

Thanks Marc, appreciate you taking the time to help!

I've downloaded the Firmware from both the Europe site and the Irish site. Tried the above routine with both firmwares, same result.
I've formatted multiple SD cards (including low level) with the camera to no avail.
John

You really are a legend!, none of the U tubes mentioned that step, they said the only button that would work was just pressing the Q/Set.
It is at 3% as I write.

Much appreciated

This sounds absolutely maddening, but I think I know what's happening!

This behavior usually indicates that the update isn't failing, but rather being canceled. On the EOS R7, the firmware update screen defaults the selection to [Cancel] for safety. Since the touchscreen is inactive during this process, simply pressing the Q/SET button tells the camera to abort the update and return to normal operation. This is why you hear the shutter/sensor cleaning cycle and see the Info display immediately.

To resolve this, try these steps:

Navigate back to the Firmware Update screen.

When the "1.3.2 -> 1.7.1" screen appears, do not press SET immediately.

Use the Quick Control Dial (the wheel around the joystick) or the Cross Keys to move the blue highlight from [Cancel] to [OK].

Once [OK] is highlighted, press SET.

For reference, see HERE
