You were gifted an old camera. Where did it come from? A seller who warranted that it was fully functional?

Are you trying to focus on faraway things and things that aren't too close to the lens?

So.. my camera will not work. This is truly my last resort to try and fix it. I got this camera as a gift and I have had it since May of 2025. I've been researching and trying to figure out what is wrong with it, but nothing helps with my situation. Basically, when I turn my camera on (EOS Rebel XSI), it will not focus no matter what I do. and I cant figure out how to work it. Like, it's always just blurry no matter what setting I turn it on.. If anyone knows what I can do, or if it is just an issue with my camera lens, PLEASE let me know!! Also, I'm not sure if this is helpful or not, but the lens I have on it is a canon zoom lens EF-S 18-55mm

Thank you!

Sorry I have to ask, is the switch on the lens set to AF? In the image below this lens is set to MF (Manual focus).

Can you focus the lens manually?

No, it's completely okay to ask, but yes the lens is set to AF.

@itskaradude Check the AF/MF switch on the right hand side of the lens barrel. When looking at the camera from the lens side. Ensure it’s set to AF. Note this lens does NOT support what Canon calls “Full Time Manual Focus”. So NEVER turn the focus ring without first setting the lens AF/MF switch to MF. This can result in damage to the lens’ gears and AF motor. Note the last 2 versions of that lens say “STM” in the name. Those lenses support full time manual focus. These lenses are “Focus By Wire”. Meaning the focus ring isn’t physically connected to the lens’ focusing elements. Instead the lens’ AF motor handles MF. The lens requires power for MF to work.

It sounds like your lens has become disconnected.

Gently try the method discussed here:

https://community.usa.canon.com/t5/EF-RF-Lenses/Autofocus-not-working-18-55mm-lens/td-p/138114

Itskaradude,

I think the first thing you want to do is isolate the problem. Do you have a friend nearby who has a camera that uses an EF mount like your camera does who might have a different lens than the one you have? Or a camera store?

If you try a different lens, and still have the same problem, then you know it's not the lens, it's probably the camera.

If you try a different lens, and the problem is fixed, then the problem is probably with the lens.
