Does the EOS 90D have the second row of pins needed for utilizing the extra speed of a UHS-II SD card? Various sources are contradictory on this answer. I'm not looking for an answer of, it will accept a UHS-II card, but whether the body has the required pins it needs to use the card as designed. Thanks

Fully Supported does not necessarily mean that they will be fully functional.

Both the UHS-I and UHS-II cards will work in any device that accepts SD cards. However, not every device can take advantage of the extra speed that is provided by the extra set of contacts that are on a USH-II card. If you're buying a UHS-II card for the latter, you're wasting money as it will be no faster than the fastest UHS-I.

The manual just mentions that it is "compatible". I guess you can take that as it utilizes the faster throughput of the UHS-II card. But it [the manual] doesn't actually state that it does.

Exactly, combined with multiple user reports of little to no perceivable benefit, it makes me wonder. Mix in various photography tech sites that are 50/50 divided on the answer and I don't know what to think.

I can confirm that yes, UHS-II cards work in the 90D and work faster than UHS-I cards.

Anecdotal Example: With a reasonably fast UHS-I card, the buffer might fill after 16-18 continuous shots at 10fps. My UHS-II card does not stall until 21-24 frames but the buffer empties faster because the 90D writes to the UHS-II Card faster. The faster write speed is the benefit.

From a practical standpoint, the difference might be marginal, but to me the difference was noticeable.

Hope this helps.

The USH II cards have two rows of contacts. The UHS I cameras cannot utilize that added technology. "Compatible"? yes... but backward compatible.

I searched the “90D Advanced User Guide” for references to UHS-II, and a comment staothe camera was compatible with both UHS-I and UHS-II USB cards. I would not assume that the 90D is capable of using the advanced features of the UHS-II cards, as they are designed to be backwards compatible.

So, I decided to investigate the specs. The screenshot is from the first page of the relevant section regarding card performance. Inked UHS-I cards are listed in the specs.

Because of the backward compatibility, I would expect near identical performance from UHS-II cards. Note the page number.

I also checked the manual, and on the page following the one you showed it is titled Guide to Image Quality Settings, and includes a maximum burst measurement. In the notes for that table it says that a standard / UHS-II card was used for the Canon testing.
