What lens are you using?

With no switch on the side of the lens to change from AF to MF, it sounds like you are using a manual lens. If that is the case, half-pressing the shutter button will not focus the lens for you. If you do not have auto focus, you can't change the focus mode either.

Does your lens have a focus ring separate from the zoom ring?

That looks like the kit lens. If it is there are no switches on it to control, AF/MF, IS & the control ring. Instead it’s controlled from the camera menu for RF & RF-S lenses that lack these switches. Some RF & RF-S have physical switches that control those functions. When they lack those switches those settings are controlled from the camera menu.

——————-

Maybe. It’s an STM lens. The STM lenses are “focus by wire.” I am not familiar with the RF version of 18-45mm lens.

The R100 is basically the M6 m2 with an RF lens mount. The lens seems to be an RF adaptation of the EF-M 18-45mm lit lens. I do not know whether this lens has “zoom by wire.” The camera does have a setting that you can enable to “retract the lens on power off.” The existence of the setting suggests that it could have electronic zoom.

Doesn’t matter if it’s VCM, USM or STM. The only non-focus by wire RF lens is the RF 75-300mm F/4-5.6 lens. The only reason this lens isn’t is because it uses Micro Motor. Then also it’s an old EF lens that was repackaged for the RF Mount.

Looking at the lens online is a curious one. The lens has a physical zoom ring, but it has a retractable setting (white dot) and you rotate it to the left to get to the focal length options. I understand the concept of zoom by wire, but if the ring itself will not move...That's what's confusing me.

@LeeP that lens is not “Zoom by wire”. I was just at the camera store earlier looking at that the lens mounted to the EOS R10. It allowed me to zoom in and out while the camera was off. Now the RF-S 14-30mm F/4-6.3 IS STM lens is zoom by wire. It doesn’t have focal length markings on the lens itself. Instead the camera’s LCD screen displays the focal length. I also saw this lens mounted to the EOS R50V. The ring on that lens does move but if the lens doesn’t have power ie the metering timer has timed out. The focal length doesn’t change until the lens has power again. Just like focus by wire lenses. No power no MF adjustment available.
