Hi folks from the North of England

Yesterday I noticed my camera had a message

Firmware update Ver 1.1.3

Card containing Firmware required for update.

On checking I found I'm on Ver 1.1.1

Camera is just over 2 yrs old.

So I found 1.1.3 on line, but I only have an old ipad and Samsung Galaxy phone - neither of which can open the file.

So: a couple of questions

Am i at risk of harming my camera without the latest version?

I can use my son's computer to download the new version onto a card.

Please explain the process in simple steps and what card should I purchase to do this?

I'm old and not very comfortable in these techie situations

Thanks as ever

Welcome back.

“ Yesterday I noticed my camera had a message

Firmware update Ver 1.1.3

Card containing Firmware required for update.

On checking I found I'm on Ver 1.1.1

Camera is just over 2 yrs old.

So I found 1.1.3 on line, but I only have an old ipad and Samsung Galaxy phone - neither of which can open the file. “

This all sounds a little odd, beginning with the camera displaying a message that it needed to be updated. It’s not normal to see that type of message, not unless you are attempting to update the camera.

”Finding a copy of the firmware online” also seems very odd. The firmware should only come from the Canon website that serves your country of origin. Instructions on how to install the update should be available on the same web page where you downloaded the firmware.

Have you left out any details of your experience.

Yes you can use your son's PC. I am assuming it's windows. Download the windows version of the firmware.

Have your create a file for the download to be placed into because it will need to be unzipped/files extracted. Once extracted there are decent set of instructions that will show in the folder. just follow those for the update.

Make sure you have a fully charged battery in the camera and don't shut the camera off during the update.

No, it does not harm your camera to leave the firmware currently on it alone. If you are nervous about updating it, skip it. There is info about what the firmware update does, but chances are there's nothing of importance to you.

Hi Ramsden,

Depending on the age of your iPad and the version of the Canon Connect app that's available for it, you can update the firmware on your camera using the Canon Connect app. No need for cable or computer. Note, it must be v3.x (newer version). Look at the app you have. If the hamburger menu has login to Canon ID it should support wireless firmware update.

According to a web search 1.1.3 is a factory installed firmware: not available for user download in the US.

Firmware update also is available on the Android version on the Samsung Galaxy for Canon Connect 3.5.11.15 (build 1455) after connecting the camera (at least for the R6 Mark ii as that's what I tested).
