I put the new firmware update on one of two cards. In the root directory. I put it in slot 1 and took out slot 2 card. I then went to the camera and turned it on. No lens attached. Click on Firmware, then it asked if I wanted to update. I clicked OK, it then tried to read the card and got that message. Next I tried putting the firmware update on both cards root directory. Still same problem.

I checked my firmware in my camera and it is old. 1.6.1. The new firmware is 2.1.1. When I try to update I get a message "Update file error. Please check the memory card and reload the battery and try again." . Repeated attempts would not go pass this message.

If you haven't already, reformat the card in the camera before using your PC to write the update files to it. Make sure that the update file is in the root directory of your CF card.

If you have already done this, delete the update file from your downloads directory. Then download and extract again. I have run into issues with the Unzip program corrupting files before.

You can also use EOS utility to do the update. I have always used the copy to card method but the utility is an option if you can't get the write to card method to work.

Once the firmware update starts, it will appear to freeze at times but don't worry it is still running. It does take a relatively long time for it to complete parts of the process and then it seems to fly through the others.

I prefer using the USB cable and the EOS Utility because my memory card slot setup seems to always needs to be restored. This is probably due to the fact that I only have one card in the camera when doing an update via memory card.

This should not be a problem with bodies that can save the camera settings to a memory card. It’s the act of closing the card slot door with only one memory card that creates the card settings issue. Only having one card in the camera during a firmware update is advisable.
