Broken Mode Dial - EOSR50

Hello,

I received an email from Canon about two weeks ago regarding a potential issue with the mode dial on my EOS R50. A few days ago, the mode dial on my camera broke, just as the email described. I would like to have it repaired under the programme mentioned.

Could you please advise me on the process to send my camera in for repair? I am located in Guyana and want to make sure I follow the correct steps.

You are in the Canon's Latin America service region so this webpage takes you to the service locator for your country: https://www.cla.canon.com/en/service-locator However for the R50 they note that service may not be available and instruct you to call their service center for your country. Of course they don't list one for Guyana so your best bet will be to try calling the Canon service center in one of the larger countries in your region to see if they can take care of it.

You can try contacting Canon N. America but they will probably bounce you back to your region. A friend of mine had to play this game with Canon several years ago from his home nation in S. America and the experience ultimately turned him into a Nikon user. I hope that you receive better support but he ran into the issue that it had to be serviced in his region but service was spotty because of his location.

I remembered it from what my friend went through and it was a very different experience from what we have in the U.S. (or in Europe).

The same thing happened to me, but I didn't know it was a manufacturing fault, and I tried to fix it with super glue, but now the dial is stuck. Will they still fix it?

Canon MAY "goodwill" the repair depending upon whether the glue caused additional damage beyond the component(s) that would normally be replaced to repair the manufacturing defect so it doesn't hurt to try. But standard warranty exclusions include damage caused by the user including self-repair attempts.

Cyanoacrylate bonding agents, generically referred to as "super glue", are very useful but the fumes and outgassing produced during the curing phase can be very damaging to electronic components and optical components especially when they are contained within a small area like a camera body. So it is a product that has to be used with care around sensitive electronics and optics.

I restore vintage electronic gear and use this adhesive, often with an instant curing spray, to repair broken parts but those repairs are done with the part removed from the equipment. You don't want the curing to take place in a tightly enclosed environment if any of the parts are sensitive to the curing process.

Hey, Nilosree.

Since I live in Guyana, the shipping to the US was a pretty penny. Canon repaired it and shipped it back to me at no cost attached.

My mode dial works great. I haven’t had any issues since and I hope it stays that way.

So, the repair itself was free, but the shipping costed money right? Since I'm in the US, I won't have any shipping. Did you try using superglue like Mike?

No, I didn’t try superglue. I saw the notice of it potentially happening to my model. I was aware of it before it broke which helped ease the panic.
