topic EOS RP: Video recording dims for a few seconds then brightens? in EOS DSLR & Mirrorless Cameras

Hi all, I know almost nothing about cameras and videography. On my EOS RP I'm shooting in movie manual mode. I'm seeing some odd behavior and wondering if it rings a bell for anyone:

I noticed that in some recordings (maybe 1 out of 4?) the entire image will dim for a few seconds, then brighten again back to normal -- sometimes more than once in a single recording. For example, I was making a little movie with friends in my apartment, and in a 1.5 minute shot, in each of six takes, the entire image would darken about 20-30% for 2-3 seconds, then brighten again back to normal. It happened twice in each take, about 15-20 seconds in and again about 60 seconds in, with small variations. I didn't notice the dimming in the viewfinder because I was watching the scene, but I saw it in the recording files after.

Because the entire image dims uniformly, I don't suspect an issue with my lights. And it's at similar times in each shot, so it feels like a camera software thing but I'm not sure. I've checked that obvious culprits are off, like auto exposure, auto white balance, and auto focus.

The last thing I can think of is it tends to happen in longer-distance shots like 8-10 feet from the subjects, with an aperture like f/8 to f/10, shutter 1/50. Not sure if that's relevant.

Has anyone seen this behavior before? Let me know if I should give more info, thanks.

I'm not sure, but it almost sounds like something is passing between you and the light source.

Try taking your camera outside on a nice, bright, sunny day, take a similar video, and see if the same thing happens.
