topic EOS D30 and EF-S lens compatibility in EOS DSLR & Mirrorless Cameras

Hey everyone. I saw an online listing for a vintage Canon D30 (not the 30D). The kit includes an EF-S 18–55mm lens, but as far as I know, the D30 is only compatible with EF lenses. Most likely, the seller modified the lens mount to make it fit. I’ve heard that this kind of modification can damage the camera’s mirror. Do you think it’s worth buying the camera? I’m only interested in the body, I don’t care about the modified lens.

Yes the EOS D30 is INCOMPATIBLE with EF-S lenses. As it uses APS-H sized mirror and other components similar to the early EOS-1D series APS-H cameras. Avoid EF-S lenses for your camera. Stick with Full Frame EF lenses. I don’t think these early Digital SLRs have a “kit lens”. Instead you used the lenses that you had for your EOS 35mm Film Body. Around that time my uncle got an EOS 10D which has the same lens restrictions. As the EOS D30 & EOS D60. So he got the EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens. Then used his existing EF 50mm F/1.8 (Classic/ Original) and his original non-IS EF 70-200mm F/2.8L USM lens. My dad went a similar route when he got my mom the original Digital Rebel. But that camera was compatible with EF-S lenses.

If the original owner modified the lens before ever putting on the camera there would be no mirror damage

If possible try and get a photo if the rear of the lens from the seller.

You are correct EOS D30 is only compatible with full frame EF lenses. At the time the recommended kit lens was the EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM.

Some people have modified EF-S lenses to allow them to fit on EF mount cameras. Usually by removing the plastic at the rear of the lens.

I have seen examples where modified EF-S 10-18mm lenses were used with EOS 5D Mark IV cameras for shooting 4K video. That camera worked in crop mode for 4K so there was no vignetting from the EF-S and it was an inexpensive way to get a wider view for movies.

I had to look up what an EOS D30 was and I'm sure 3.1 megapixels was amazing for the day, but wow. It would be fun to own one as a curiosity.

I say the same thing when I look back at my old EOS 40D from 2007. It had to serve as the midrange APS-C DSLR and flagship APS-C DSLR. The EOS 7D (Classic) wouldn’t be released until 2009.
