Hello! Thank you for your advice to update the firmware. I got the Sigma lens doc and used Sigma Optimization Pro to update the firmware to the latest version, and I updated my EOS 80D's firmware as well. However, the problem still persists. Do you have any further advice on what the problem may be since the firmware may not be the issue? Thanks.

My camera shutter is malfunctioning. I can take normal photos and videos, but every now and then, the camera will rapidly click. It doesn't take any pictures, but the camera is trying to do something. It will also do this if the camera is switched off and the battery is still in the camera. It especially does the clicking after I try to focus the camera using the shutter button. I turned off auto cleaning of the sensor, and this problem still happens. It also still happens on both manual and auto focus. I have attached a video from my viewfinder to show what is happening: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/cX-8-ChK7IE

How much would repairing this cost? Do y'all recommend I send this in for repairs, or should I get an upgrade/a new camera? My camera is approaching 10 years old, and I use it a lot for birding to help ID birds and to get good pictures of them. The lens on the camera is Sigma 18-300mm lens.

Thanks for the help!

I suggest resetting the camera back to its factory defaults and trying a different lens. Preferably a Canon lens.

First you should do a full back to factory default settings as suggested above. Consult your manual if you don't know how. Second you need to ascertain how much the camera is worth before you try any repairs. Then call Canon 1 (800) 652-2666 to see if they even service the 80D any longer. If they do they willinsturct you about how to send it in. You will get an estimate before any repairs if needed will cost. You can also ask about the Canon Loyalty program.

Hello! Thank you for your advice. I tried a Canon lens on my 80D, and the problem no longer occurs. I think there’s something wrong with the Sigma lens. I tried the Sigma lens on a different Canon body (Rebel T5), and the problem happens. I wonder if there’s something wrong with the connectivity between the lens and camera body. Do you have any ideas on what may be wrong or how this may be fixed? Thanks!!

If it has IS that may be malfunctioning, sticky aperture blades might alse be a problem. Try Sigma's service.

Extremely unlikely to impossible to be the problem. However, easily confirmed or not by trying a different lens.

OP already stated he tried different camera and lens, confirming it's a lens problem so I suggested possible lens defects. Why are those impossible?

What Sigma lens do you have please provide the full name of the lens. Does the lens name say “OS” this is Sigma’s way of describing Canon’s lens IS. But the rapid clicking noise could be aperture motor which can be noisy. Set the camera to Av Mode and set a small aperture such as F/11 and press the depth of field preview button. This will stop down the lens to the selected setting. While the camera is focusing the lens aperture is at wide open. Pressing the depth of field preview button will determine if the lens aperture motor is at fault. Or if the lens’ IS motors are at fault here. I would press the button a couple times to see if the sound is reproducible. I would also turn off OS to see if the sound is still producible when trying to focus with the lens set to AF.

Hello! Thank you for your advice! I have a Sigma 18-300mm 1:3.5-6.3 DC lens. I tried doing the tricks you suggested, but the clicking keeps happening at random times. The frame in my viewfinder physically moves when the clicking happens (it shows up really well in the video link I included in the initial post), so it's not just a sound.

The lens may very well be the problem. However, I do not think it likely is "sticky aperture blades" and even less likely it is the OS (Sigma's stabilization is called OS not IS). If it is a Sigma lens problem it is very much more likely to be a FW issue.
