I just recently bought an EOS 2000D and can not figure out where the country of origin it is from. I tried the serial number check and it just tells me it was not intended by Canon for sale in the European Economic Area. I’m new to all this so just want to make sure I’m not being scammed or anything!

Ser. #543076[xxxxxx]

Where are you located in exactly. The North American version is the EOS Rebel T7. I would recommend returning it. If you’re located in North America. That is considered a gray market camera and there is no warranty. Canon has the right to refuse repair of gray market camera gear. Only buy from Canon Authorized Dealers.

I’m located in North America. I purchased it used being aware that it was grey market just wanting a cheap camera. Wasn’t sure of the serial number or anything though!

From my knowledge of Canon serial numbers that does appear to be the serial number of a camera that would be shipped to the European market. The third character of the serial number, in your example 3, is usually the "region" designation, and my own cameras purchased in Europe all have a 3 in the third character of the serial number.

I also checked with the Canon Europe serial number checker and it said that your camera was not a European one.

I wonder if the serial number has been changed on the outside of the camera. To find the real serial number you can take a JPG image, small most compressed JPG is fine and you can even leave the lens cap on to make it a totally black image. Using the Canon DPP software and many others you can read the camera serial number from the image. That is the one that is set by Canon in the factory, and is rarely if ever changed by grey importers as it is too hard to do so.

I checked using an image and the serial number attached to the picture matches the one on the camera perfectly. Very weird but the camera seems to work perfectly fine at least!
