my auto focus feature no longer works on either camera, is this a function of the camera body which is the only part with power, or a problem with the lens. Also can or how can it be corrected? any help appreciated. thanxz bob

I guess the first question would be is have you tried a different lens? Asking because if it's just one lens, your problem lies with it. The other question is, did this happen at the same time on both bodies?

More clarification is needed than saying EOS 3 & EOS 7. Those names were also used for film cameras too. So are you using the EOS R3 body & EOS 7D series. If so are these Canon brand lenses? Complete names of lenses and cameras are needed. To prevent confusion.

Which version of the lenses do you have. Canon has released 9 different versions of that lens. The complete name can be found when the lens cap is removed. I have an example pictures below to help identify your lens. Older versions of the lens used a cheaper AF motor called Micro Motor. Turning the focus ring with the lens set to AF can damage the lens. Along with the gear train and AF motor. The newer versions with “STM” in the name don’t suffer from these problems. This is because the focus ring is NOT directly connected to the lens’ focusing elements. Instead the focus ring is electronic and those lenses use focus-by-wire technology. Preventing any type of damage from happening when turning the focus ring with the lens set to AF.

Yes you could’ve possibly damaged the lens when turning the focus ring in AF mode. The AF motor could’ve come out of alignment. This is an older lens that uses the older and cheaper AF motor called Micro Motor. This AF motor has been discontinued by Canon and was in production from 1991-2011. STM lenses don’t suffer from this problem because of the focus-by-wire design. These newer STM variants focus much faster and quieter. Kit lenses aren’t worth repairing. The cost to repair will exceed the value of the newer STM variants of the lens. I don’t know your budget for a new lens. Canon offers multiple options for standard zoom APS-C lenses.

Older kit lenses don’t hold very much value at all unless it a newer STM or USM version. Example replacement lenses below. Canon has discontinued EF/ EF-S lenses. But some can found as existing new stock, used or refurbished directly from Canon. I would recommend at you get a newer USM or STM version of lenses. Older versions may not be serviceable by Canon if the lens were fail.
