So I picked up a Canon 5dsr to be used only for fireworks displays and im having an odd problem.

Im in bule mode all manual setting and lens in manual focus.

Im getting shutter lag / delay on the second and all subsequent images until I let the buffer clear.

When I go to take an image straight after the last image you can hold the shutter down for maybe 0.25 - 0.5s before the camera will start to take the image.

The buffer is not full but it is transferring. This is with a slow SD card a Lexar 1000X 128gb but I don’t think this is the problem as the buffer is not full.

The lens im using is a Sigma 12-24mm f4.5-5.6 DG HSM.

I did some testing on my R6M2, 90D and 1100D and all work as i would expect letting let take photos as quickly as i would like until the buffer is full.

As John noted, you need a fast card for this camera given the sensor size.

But I wonder if mirror lockup or some other function is set.

If this was a previously owned body (likely since it has been our of production for some time), use tools menu tab 4 to clear all camera settings back to factory AND also go to the last tab of the custom functions screen and clear all custom functions. These are two separate items and both must be done to reset any previous user settings.

I don't shoot a lot of photos with my 5DS R bodies because I use my 1DX III bodies for sports but I have shot quite a few photos with my 5DS and 5DS R bodies in high speed drive and there was no slow down in multiple image bursts because I never ran into the 12-18 shot buffer limit.

It would be unusual behavior but if you are using servo AF with moving subjects then it can be fine tuned where you move the "bias" between shutter release and image focus; I leave all of my bodies set biased to focus since poorly focused photos are of no use to me. This adjustment is found in the second set of menu items under the AF2 tab. But unless you are using a slow focusing lens with a moving object, this sort of delay shouldn't occur under these conditions.

Turn the camera on.

In bule mode all settings manually set and lens in manual focus.
This one [ third party link DELETED ]

Shutter speed will vary a lot 1s to 5s would be typical. “
———————-

Uh oh. Links to third party products for sale are against forum rules. “These are not the droids you’re looking for.” 👋 You should be good.

Thanks, for the quick response. If your shutter speeds are well below 30s, then why use bulb mode and a remote. Did you know….?

It seems like you are capturing several “long” exposures back to back. Did you can use the built-in intervalometer to do the same thing?

You can set up the camera to automatically capture a series of images at the same exposure, or as a series of bracketed exposures.

Here’s how. Refer to the User Guide on how to set up a series of exposures at either fixed intervals or AEB. I cannot go into details just yet because I don’t know what your objective is.

Any Canon DSLR or MILC body with an internal intervalometer or AEB is capable of doing this, including Rebel Series bodies.

Once you have the exposure interval or AEB set, disable AF. I assume that you want all captures to have the same focus. Set the shutter mode to the internal 2/10 second internal timer. Set drive mode to continuous. 👍.

Now press the shutter once to initiate the shutter delay timer. 👍

The camera should now automatically capture the entire sequence of exposures. 💯

Thanks, for the quick response.

I fail to see a need to vary the exposures when capturing fireworks.🎆 Once I have a good setting for available lighting. I am set for the session.
