EOS R5 Mark II - Focus point moves

Canon R5 MKII - when I review shots with the electronic view finder and hit the enlarge button everything is fine, but when I return to my focus screen the focus point has been moved to the upper left hand corner of the view screen. I have to hit the (multi controller) toggle button a couple of times to get it back to center. Is it a bug or a feature? If it's a feature, then how to turn it off so it doesn't move? If it's a bug it is annoying.

Do you shoot with the rear display closed? If not, [close] it. I try to keep it closed so that my nose doesn’t rub against it as I bring the camera up to my eye.

Yes, I keep the rear display closed all the time unless I am doing something with the menu like formatting a card. I don't even use it to review photos as I can just as easily do that through the viewfinder.

Did you know that the camera has “Continuous AF”, where it focuses and tracks continuously? It is enabled by default.

Yes, but why would that cause the focus point to move from the center to the upper left corner only after you have reviewed pictures through the viewfinder and used the magnifier to zoom in.

One would think that it should not do that. I suggest that you save your camera settings to a memory card. Next, perform a full reset of the camera to factory defaults.

Once the camera is reset, don’t immediately start entering any custom settings that you have, especially custom controls.

Test the camera fit. Has the issue persisted after a reset?

Hi WMFryman,

There aren't any Playback settings that would change the AF point while shooting, but there is an AF setting to check with an issue like this. To check it have the camera in either P, Tv, Av, or M mode and press the Menu button. Go to the fifth page under the AF tab and select Orientation-Linked AF Points. It would be good to make sure that is set to Same for Both Ver/Horiz.

If that is how you have the Orientation-Linked AF Points set we would need some more information for further trouble shooting. Does this happen if you Playback a photo, don't use magnification, and then get out of Playback. Also does this happen if you Playback an image on the rear LCD, use magnification, and then get out of the Playback.

Okay, I checked the Orientation-Linked AF points and it is set to Same for both Ver/Horiz. No, it does not happen if I use playback and don't use magnification. I rarely use the rear screen LCD but I tried looking at a photo, using magnification and then went back to playback and the focus point did not move. The focus point does not move to the upper left corner every time that I view a photo and zoom it, but it does do that randomly. At this point I am pretty used to it and hit the toggle switch 2 or 3 times to get it back to center. The only down side is if you have just reviewed some shots and then want to jump back in right away you will miss some shots if the focus point is in the wrong place. I have asked a few other R5 MKII owners and some say this happens to them, others say it doesn't.
