in camera 16:9 aspect ratio crop makes incorrect aspect ratio jpg/heif image

Hi Canon and Canon users,

I am really surprised as I searched the web a few times in the last few years, but did not find any complain, nor explanation about this bug! (or Google did not put any for me on the list)

The bug exists in all cameras I met/tried untill now (70D, 5D, M, M50, R5, R10, R7 etc.).
The bug: we can set in camera crop to 16:9 aspect ratio. That's OK.

This crop is recorded into the raw (CR2/CR3) files, and if one sets their camera to save JPG/HEIF also, then the camera saves it, but with incorrect aspect ratio! It just looks like 16:9, but it is not 16:9.

The mathematics for example for a 2400 long edge image is:
2400 is the 16 and the short edge is the 9, so
2400 / 16 = 150
150 * 9 = 1350
So with the 16:9 crop aspect ratio we should get 2400x1350px JPG/HEIF files.

BUT ALL CANON CAMERAS MAKE 2400x1344px images instead of this!!!
AND THIS APPLIES TO ALL JPG/HEIF SIZES, not counting in the full sensor size images!

For example in my R5 I can save in these sizes in 16:9 crop JPG/HEIF files:
8192x4608 (this is "full sensor size", and it is correct, true 16:9)
5808x3264 instead of 5808x3267
4176x2344 instead of 4176x2349
2400x1344 instead of 2400x1350

WHY THIS HAPPENS? WHAT HAPPENS WITH MATH IN CANON CAMERAS?!

Sincerely,
Gime

#aspectratio #incorrect
