Hello all!

I purchased a canon EOS R 50 in May of this year. I use the camera for pro wrestling photographs. The camera fired off an error code, lens 01. I took a soft cloth and cleaned the lens, and I am no longer receiving this error. But, now the camera won’t take pictures. When I hold down the button, it tries to flash, but won’t take an actual photo.

Any thoughts?

Hey StephH913, sorry to hear that you are having challenges with your gear.

What lens are you using and have you tried a different lens to see if the problem persists?

Hi Marc,

I am using the 24-70mm with the EF to RF adapter. Part of me wonders if it’s something with the adapter, I ordered a new one just to test this theory. I also tried the kit lens as well, and it’s doing the same thing. Again, the error is gone but it won’t take any photos.

Thanks!

Are you using the Canon adapter or a third party?

I had issues with the third party adapters and ended up grabbing the less expensive Canon and my issues went away.

It sounds like you access to the menus, have you attempted a factory reset?

I am using a canon adapter. I bought it off KEH.com with the lens.

I also did factory reset the camera back to the “basic settings”.

It’s very odd that it worked fine, I shot 3 shows this past weekend with it and no issues. Then, I had a show last night and noticed it wasn’t working.

I would highly recommend following Marc’s advice. Stick with the Canon brand mount adapter. So many people come to the forum with problems with EF lenses not working on their new RF Mount camera. The most common cause is the 3rd Party Mount adapter. Once a Canon brand mount adapter is used all of the problems go away. Also which EF 24-70mm lens are you using? Canon has made multiple lenses with that stated focal length. So an exact name is needed to differentiate between models. I’ve noticed these newer R series that they use much faster communication speeds than what a DSLR uses. This exposes potential problems such as old failing hardware in the lens. That normally wouldn’t be seen in a DSLR camera due to slower communication speeds.

Which version of the EF 24-70mm exactly. There are multiple versions of that lens. So saying “EF 24-70mm isn’t good enough or a complete name. Remove the lens cap and the name can be found on the outer ring. I have example lenses below to help you identify your exact lens model. Without knowing the exact lens model we cannot help you. All we know is the lens focal length and that it is an EF lens. But we don’t know anything else about it.

Since it is happening with both EF and RF glass it may be best to attempt a factory reset. If you have custom settings set up it will wipe them and you will need to set them back up.

Power on the camera

Access the menu

Go to the setup/settings (wrench) menu 5

Select reset camera basic settings

Confirm reset

I would also go into the others settings and reset the communication settings.

I always reboot the camera.

Is that lens the only 1 that gives you the error message or are both are? Can you test the lens on a DSLR camera by any chance? I don’t believe Canon repairs that lens anymore. How long ago did you get that lens? Where did you get that lens from? Or is it an older that you purchased years ago and not recently.

You wrote, "When I hold down the button, it tries to flash, but won’t take an actual photo.:

What do you mean, "It tries to flash"? Does this mean you are using your flash to take a picture?

What happens if you go outside on a bright sunny day and don't use your flash? If you are able to take a picture, it might mean that there is some issue in your flash settings.

Yes, it is the only lens giving me the error message. I purchased it in June 2025 from KEH.com. It’s past the return date.

I called a few camera repair shops near me and many sad they don’t work on mirrorless cameras.

The flex cable has likely failed in the lens and is no longer supported by Canon for repairs. That particular lens is known for flex cable failures. Since your RF lens works that’s the mostly cause of the error.
