I have read past discussions here about this but not found a solution. When opening a RAW file from my R5 Mark ii in Windows photo app it will not display properly. Additionally, Windows Media Player will not play video files.

I know that DPP4 is an option, but it does not work for me. I also realize that this is a Windows issue, no Canon's but am asking if anyone is aware of a solution, update, etc?

Thanks in advance.

I don't believe there is anything native in the Windows OS but Microsoft's Raw Image Extension which you can find in the Microsoft Store enables windows file explorer and the photos app to preview and view CR3. I can't remember if you can edit, I used to use it strictly for viewing.

Even if the video uses a common distribution codec, cameras/camcorders typically package up everything within a container that is not directly readable by operating systems. You'd need to use an appropriate editor or transcoder to generate a video file suitable for distribution (e.g. H.264).

For RAW files, you'd need an appropriate RAW converter. Canon's free DPP, Adobe Lightroom, etc.

Tip: If you capture RAW+JPEG, the OS will then show you previews of the JPEG files so you'd then have previews for the corresponding RAW files.

And for video, never tried it, but if you capture a proxy format along with the original footage, the proxy files may be standalone such that you could preview them in the OS.

Why is DPP4 not working? The RAW Image Extension will allow viewing directly in folders. I would assume, but don't know for sure, if it also covers the Photos app.

I find DPP4 very cumbersome and hard to work with. Even so, when I try to open a video from my R5 Mii, it says it is unable to open the video….
