Canon EOS R7 — Large Price Drop Shortly After Purchase from Amazon

Hello,

I bought the Canon EOS R7 (body only) from Amazon just five days ago for $1,400 plus tax. Today I noticed that Walmart — also listed as an authorized Canon dealer — is offering the exact same product for $1,149.95. That’s a significant price drop in less than a week.

As a starting creator investing in professional gear, a $250 difference is a big deal for me.

I wanted to ask:

Is there any price protection or adjustment policy from Canon in such cases?

Do you offer any guidance or support when major pricing differences occur between authorized retailers shortly after purchase?

I understand this may fall under retailer policy, but since both Amazon and Walmart are Canon-authorized sellers, I hoped Canon might provide advice or assistance.

Thank you in advance for your time and understanding.

Hello!

While yes, they are both Canon Authorized Dealers, we do not control their pricing policies so there are a couple options here. First, you can reach out to Amazon to see if they price match. Second, you can return the camera to Amazon and then purchase from Walmart at the discounted price.

If this purchase had been made via our online store directly that would have fallen under our pricing policy, unfortunately that is not the case in this instance.

I hope this clarifies!

Thanks for the clarification.

I reached out to Amazon, but they declined the price adjustment. I haven’t activated the warranty, but I did unbox the camera I bought from them.

If I purchase the same model from Walmart and keep it sealed, can I return that unopened unit to Amazon instead of the one I already unboxed? Both cameras are identical and still within the return window.

I’m asking because I’m concerned that returning an opened unit might result in a restocking fee, which could wipe out the price difference — and I’d just end up losing time and money.

Thanks again for your help.

That would be unethical.

Look at things this way... at the time you made the purchase, you were ok with spending that particular amount. You already reached out to Amazon, and unfortunately they wouldn't apply a price match. But, enjoy your new camera!

This is a big purchase for me, and not having an official warranty just isn’t worth the risk.

That $250 difference doesn’t justify the uncertainty — if I wanted to take that kind of risk, I’d rather buy used gear and get a much steeper discount.

Now I can stop second-guessing and just enjoy the camera I already have. Really appreciate the clarification!

Thanks, but I don’t recall asking for a sermon on ethics. Not everyone lives in a world where $250 is just bottled water on a private jet.
Some of us actually live in the real world.

Greetings,

Just some general comments. Both Amazon and Walmart are authorized Canon dealers.

In addition, both are also marketplace platforms that offer products from different sellers.

Example, the Amazon ad you posted doesn't say ships from and sold by Amazon. It says ships from and sold by Adorama. I'm willing to bet that the Walmart ad is being offered by a third party... They may not be an authorized Canon dealer. Check the ships from and sold by information to confirm.

Both platforms offer deals from third party sellers who many times are offering grey market products. Look closely. 👀

For the benefit of others, I'll mention this again. Canon does not operate or control a store on Amazon or similar sellers. When you go to Amazon and you see a link that says visit the Canon store... That's something that Amazon created, not Canon. Canon does not control the products or pricing. This can be one explanation for cost variance.

**Always buy from a Canon authorized dealer. If you don't, you may receive grey market merchandise that is not intended for sale or covered by warranty in the country where you live.

AnatoliBerndik,

I did notice that the Amazon ad does state that the Amazon camera ship from and is sold by Adorama. Adorama is an authorized Canon USA reseller and has (to the best of my knowledge) a good reputation. I've bought a tripod from them and was happy with transaction.

However, I would double check that your camera came with a Canon USA warranty card. It's actually a sheet of paper that clearly says Canon USA. If there isn't a warranty sheet or some other type of warranty information that was packed with your camera, perhaps contact Adorama and inquire about the warranty coverage and who the warranty provider will be.

I hope this helps.

LZ.

I agree with kvbarkley: "With that much of a price difference, I would expect you got a Wal-Mart Marketplace camera that is grey market." That's why I don't purchase camera equipment or anything from the Walmart website. When Canon doesn't have it in stock, I always buy from Amazon when it is "Sold by Amazon and Shipped by Amazon" because Amazon is an Official Canon Distributor. I also go to B & H cameras for my equipment because they're also a trusted Official Canon Distributor. Walmart's website is an open platform with lots of third-party sellers which are not Canon official resellers and may stiff you with grey market equipment. Have fun with your new Canon EOS R7.
