When you assign the "Registered AF function" it switches the AF settings, but does not activate AF.

You need to assign the AF & metering start function to the "asterisk" button, but note that there is a second level of detailed settings that can be accessed by pressing the INFO button. This level will allow you to override the cameras current settings for AF area etc while the button is pressed, but also initiates AF.

Below is an example of the detail that is possible on the EOS R5 Mark II which I have the screen captures for. It's largely similar for the EOS R6 Mark II - which is almost the same as your EOS R8. If there is a check mark in the left column then the camera setting will be overridden with the setting on the right. No check mark and the setting on the camera will not be overridden.

EOS R8 * button set for AF but won't focus

I recently purchased an R8 and am having issues setting up the second back button. I have the AF-On set up for single point. I tried setting the * button for Registered AF function. It did set it up and I registered the AF function that I wanted. When I press the * button, the AF Area 1 that I selected shows up, but it will not focus.

What am I missing
