Canon R and R5 banding issues in Silent Mode

Hi all!

Here's my issue. I'm currently shooting for a job on set and I'm required to shoot in silent mode. The problem is, I often times experience banding issues with my R5 and R. I don't have the option to shoot in Mechanical or anti-flicker so that's out. I've tried slowing down my shutter speed but my photos still come out slightly soft or blurry since my subjects move around a lot.

Any help to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated, thank you so much!

Banding issues are due to the lighting there really isn’t much you can about it. Then adjusting the shutter speed or use anti flicker shooting.

I'm not able to enable anti-flicker when shooting in silent mode.

I think the order in how things are enabled makes a difference. I fooled around with this for around 15 minutes. I don’t remember the order, but I think I set it to mech shutter so I could enable High Speed Flicker.

My camera isn't set up exactly like yours, but I appreciate your help! I may just keep adjusting the shutter speed until I buy a new camera later on.

I am using the R6 Mark II. You should be able to set yours up the same way. I encountered the same issue as you. I could not enable HF Flicker mode.

As I noted, the order in which settings I changed made the difference!

Enable mechanical shutter
Enable HF Flicker Detection
Enable Silent Mode

Once you enable Silent Mode, the Shutter Mode will automatically switch to Electronic Shutter and become greyed out.

I checked the manual for the EOS R5 (classic) its NOT possible to use BOTH the electronic shutter and Anti Flicker shooting at the same time. The EOS R6 (classic) has this same restriction too.

The R6ii manual says the same thing.

Did you set mechanical shutter first? Did you follow the order I suggested?

The R6 Mark Ii does the same thing!

Yes I tried that exact order that you posted on the original EOS R5 and it wouldn't work. Though it IS supported on the EOS R5 Mark II & EOS R6 Mark II. Its also available on the EOS R3, EOS R8. I think this feature was added in newer camera but not older ones. The original R & RP don't support it either.

Sounds like “HF Flicker” might be the game changer.
