EOS R6 Mark II - LCD issues compared to my old 5D mark III

I am just now making the switch from my old 5D mark III to a new R6 mark II and am having trouble with differences between the 2 when it comes to using the LCD screen. With my 5D, my preferred set up was to have the LCD always off unless I pressed the Set button which I had chosen to turn on the LCD to view the just made image (chimp). Otherwise the LCD was always off whyich was great especially If I was shooting in a dark location and did not want my camera glowing.

On the R6 mark II it does not look like I can remap the Set button to turn on the LCD and review the last image AND it does not look like I can have the LCD not come on after taking a shot. All I can find is a setting to have the LCD turn off after 5 seconds, but it appears obligatory that the LCD turn on after every shot. I don't need it and it uses up battery power.

Is my understanding correct? Am I just stuck with this behavior? I do know that I can turn the LCD panel around so it doesn't work and I can review images only in the viewfinder, but I would prefer my old way of chimping.

Thoughts as I grapple with this new camera? 😀

The rear screen on an MILC body behaves much like a DSLR body operating in Live View mode. Your best option is close the rear LCD until you need to use it.

You can also use the EVF to display anything that can be viewed on the rear LCD.

Thank for that comment. You might be right as that being the only solution. I just think it is so odd that one cannot set the LCD to not come on unless you want it to. I've been able to set the time out for 5 seconds, but still after taking a picture, the crazy thing turns on and displays a setting panel that is totally useless to me and of course eats battery. How strange.

Thanks John. I do have that setting made, but weirdly it does not stop the LCD from automatically turning on after a shot and just displays a settings info panel. Looks like Canon has chosen to not allow you to turn that off but you can diminish the time it is on to 5 seconds, but it will light up every time. Just so curious.

Hello, printer1000!

I've had the R6 II for a while, although it's not my primary camera, I am still quite familiar with it. There is no way, that I have found, to blank the rear LCD in the way you are used to on your DSLR. My wife, who uses the R6 II, and I both like the INFO screen displayed, so it really hasn't bothered us. We use "Auto switching" on our R's and the LCD blanks when we get close.

If you are concerned about battery you can make the rear LCD sleep by binding that feature [sleep ZzZ] to a button. The EVF will activate when you put your eye to it, but you have to press the button again to snooze the LCD after the shot is taken or you've chimped your image. You can find this feature in the custom button configuration menu. To me, that is more favorable than having to close the screen. Another option is to disable the LCD and do everything through the EVF. This is actually quite effective and the EVF is quite clear and easy to see, particularly when chimping your shots, you may be surprised.

My R5 II has a "blank" screen that can be added to the INFO toggle, but as mentioned, I like the INFO display, go figure, LOL!

Here is another very strange behavior. I notice that if the camera is hanging by my side and my coat gets near the eyepiece or my elbow gets near the eye piece etc., the viewfinder turns on. This could easily run down your battery if something covers the eyepiece for a long time. Is there really no way to keep this camera from turning on by itself? I am gobsmacked by this.

Finally found it. Yes that can instantly turn off the LCD. That is "some" progress. 🙂 Chose the set button.

I have found a solution (I think!). I have discovered that I can set a button to a custom function to Power Off the camera. I have chosen the red movie button since I never take videos with my camera. Clearly this is not a complete power off with the hardware switch since pushing any button will instantly bring the camera back on and ready to go. So now I can keep the viewfinder from turning on when I am simply carrying my camera around covered with my arm or coat. If I am in active shooting mode I can just quickly turn off the rear LCD screen with another custom button, but still have the electronic viewfinder ready to go. Thus I have gained control over all the on and off aspects of the camera to match different carrying and shooting scenarios and have returned this camera's "vibe" to what I could do with my 5Diii DSLR. Thanks to all for all the input which was so helpful and got me thinking in different and creative directions.

Interesting problem that I guess you've solved. But coming from a DSLR I really like being able to "chimp" in the viewfinder, I keep my screen reversed and not shown when shooting. that really makes for great battery life also.

Great comments Tom. Your perspective makes me think in new ways. Yes, perhaps chimping in the viewfinder will be great. I have already noticed that the image on the LCD screen is just so so and it is much brighter and more clear in the VF. Just kinda weird (unfamiliar) to be looking through a "tunnel" to see the image there instead of holding the LCD away from my face to examine the image, but maybe that is really gonna be great once I get used to it. Thanks for the thoughts.
