Wildlife and portrait camera suggestions

Greetings to everyone,

I have a RF mount lens and want to upgrade my camera, so suggest this...

Which camera should one buy for wildlife and portrait photography, R5 Mark II, R6 Mark II or R6 Mark III?

My budget is around $4500 (INR 4 lakhs).

First there isn’t an R6 Mark III. Only an R6 Mark II at this current time. What is the Full name of the RF Mount lens you have. Saying “RF 70-200mm” isn’t a complete name because multiple lenses have that name. The full name would for instance “RF 70-200mm F/4L IS USM” lens.

Means awaiting for upcoming R6 Mark III.

Available lens RF100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM & RF24-105mm f/2.8L IS USM

Do you need 45 megapixels. Is recording video something important to you. Or is it just an unused feature of camera. Do you only do stills work only or record video too. You need a computer that can handle a lot of data. 45 megapixels creates large file sizes. The R5 Mark II has limitations with older LP-E6 batteries. Such as first generation LP-E6 won’t even work in the camera. Then the newer LP-E6N and LP-E6NH have restrictions on recording video and drive mode for shooting. The newer LP-E6P was specifically designed for that camera. To make full use out of the camera the LP-E6P battery is required. I would get a couple extra batteries if you go with the R5 Mark II. Not any of the older LP-E6 series batteries.

Most use is for photography and storage is not a problem.

Are you going to be cropping the pictures if so the R5 Mark II would be a better choice.

The EOS R6 Mark II. Have you considered the EOS R7 too?

Ok I didn’t that that you strictly wanted a Full Frame body. Or even might have owned a crop sensor R series camera.

Demetrius has already asked a lot of the right questions. 👍. Based on that, I would recommend the R5 Mark II.

You already have an R50 that the RF 24-105 will work pretty well with at 24MP.

The R5 Mark II will give you a little more versatility, better ISO performance,, the ability to crop freely with all of Canon's latest/ greatest AF performance and features. I have thoroughly enjoyed my R5 C the last 2 and 1/2 years and came from a 26.2 MP body. You will be future-proofed with two great bodies.

From March 3, the price for the R6 MkII is pretty aggressive and it might be the best bet for low light performance @ this price point.

Either the R5 Mark II or the R6 will produce excellent portraits when combined with your 24-105mm f2.8L lens.

Your success with wildlife will depend on the type of wildlife you are shooting. If you are shooting birds and your longest lens is 400mm you will likely have to crop the photo which gives the R5 Mark II the advantage with its 45mp sensor. If you are trying to shoot birds taking off or catching prey or other acts that are unpredictable the R5 Mark II has a significant advantage because it has pre-capture (pre-continuous in Canon-speak). If you are willing to wait for the R6 Mark III to be released it is a reasonable guess that the R6 III will have pre-capture.

When the RF 200-800 lens came out I was very interested in a lens of that length at that price. So I did a ton of research for which camera would be best for it (in my budget). Everything came up to the R6 MarkII because of the 24MP sensor on full frame, which really helps with low light. I'm not saying anything bad about the R5 MarkII, it actually was not available when I bought in to the system, but the R5 was and it was out of my budget so I really didn't look at it much. I also looked at the Nikon Z system and 180-600 mm lens, interesting with internal focus, but the lens did not have the draw of 800mm, and I was pretty well sold on the R6 Mark II by then. I was not a Canon nor Nikon user before this, so I had no residual glass or pull to either system, my mind was open. I am also a Pentax user, and Pentax offers nothing over 450mm. So last June I bought the pair (lens did not arrive until September). I am totally happy with it and glad I made the purchase. I would probably be happy with the R5 Mark II also. This is just my own experience.

I used the R6 MKII and the RF100-500mm lens to go to Africa and photograph wildlife and had no issues at all.

The RF100-500 is an outstanding lens and I would have to image it was perfect for Africa mounted on the R6 MkII. It would be great to see some of your shots delong. I was supposed to take that trip and it fell apart on me.
