hello. I have just tried to do a firmware update using the card and the file download from canons website. the process of updating had started and quickly got to 86%, but now has stopped completely. I have tried going from 1.7.1 to 1.9.0 and after several attempts it will not complete. I have tried version 1.8.0 and still no joy. I am currently trying to reinstall the same firmware that was on it at 1.7.1 and it has done the same thing with the red write light flashing constantly

has anyone got any ideas or is it a send off back to canon?

Greetings,

If you still have control of the camera, I would reset its main in custom settings to defaults.

Try performing the firmware update without any accessories attached to the camera, lens, flash, etc.

Use a fully charged battery and a different card, freshly formatted in camera. Ensure you are using the correct .FIR file for your camera.

Note: Trying to re-flash the current version of firmware the camera is currently on won't do anything.

If the above steps don't help, the camera should go to Canon for inspection and repair.

Maybe your copy of the firmware file has been compromised or corrupted. If downloading fresh copies of the firmware doesn’t work, then you may need to send the camera to Canon.

Not every firmware update is beneficial to all users. Review why the update was released and if you need it.

Make certain that your wireless settings are disabled when you attempt the update. If you are using a memory card, only use one card inside the camera.

I have updated my 1DX, 1DX II, and 1DX III bodies multiple times. The update time taken is not linear and once it gets in the mid 70 to 80% range it will slow and sometimes appear to stop several times and I recall one of the 1DX III updates appeared stalled for several minutes before taking off again and quickly finishing, I have three 1DX III bodies and they all behaved the same way on that update.

Pull the battery and the card, reformat the card and then install the update files on it again. Install the card and battery and see if the camera will let you access its menu system to try the update again. If so, start the process and leave it alone and don't touch ANY button during this process even if you think it has stalled.

If the camera is non-responsive, it will need to go to Canon for a forced firmware update because stopping or otherwise interrupting an update CAN cause the underlying control firmware to be corrupted.

Good luck!

Thank you for your reply shadowsports. Unfortunately I have no co tell of the camera. I am I able to access anything or use any button. As soon as I reinstall the battery as per canon guidelines then it goes back to the install update screen which it will only let me press accept. The first time I performed the update was because of the ability to use larger cards problem free for video and before I did it I made sure the card was formatted and the battery had just come off a 100% charge. I left it to do its thing while I went out only to come back to a dead camera with zero battery. I was only gone a few hours! I since then recharged the battery to 100% and tried again to no luck. The battery is good and was calibrated not long ago, it shows 3 bars in its status and the card is nearly new too. I have another card but because I can’t format it to the camera I believe it won’t work. The only other camera I can use to format the card is an r5 but not sure if it’s the same format procedure done.

I have done a few firmware updates over the years and I have never had this issue. And it was downloaded the same way as the others direct from the canon site. I’ve double and triple checked the file is the correct one.

As for the wireless settings I was sure they were off as I haven’t used that connectivity

I agree. All the other cameras I’ve used including mk 1s and mk 2s yes the firmware has a stutter the further up the progress it goes. But this is a stall and a freeze. I’ve let it sit for a few hours and it still hasn’t moved a single percent past 86

unfortunately it is completely non responsive. So canon I think it is

It does sound like there is likely a problem with the camera, it is rare with the 1 series but it happens.

I just did this with my new 1DX3. I had just received a new 256gb card also. I formatted it first, then went ahead with the update. Was at 88% for a few minutes for sure. Whole process was about 7 minutes. I went from V1.6 to 1.9.........
