R10: Battery Draining net when not in use

I recently purchased a Canon R10 Mirrorless DSLR camera. It managed to repeatedly drain the battery in just a few days despite being turned off. The retailer from whom I bought the camera, were exceedingly helpful. They gave me a new battery and later a new camera body when the problem persisted. When that failed they supported me in exchanging the camera for a different model - an R50. This happened again in just 5 days. I fully charged the battery, took 2 photos and it's been off otherwise. On the fifth day the battery was flat. In all, I've had 3 bodies (2 x R10 and 1 x R50) and 4 batteries in under two months, yet the problem persists. Any thoughts? Any similar issues for others?

Are you using ANY 3rd Party items on your camera ie lens, mount adapter etc.

Yes. I have a Tamron 18-270mm that I use with a Viltrox adaptor. This was never an issue with my D4500 - I left the Tamron on it for nearly 15 years with no issue! (Although that was without an adaptor).

Let the camera sit with the mount adapter and lens off with the body cap on. Then check back later to see if the battery drain is gone. 3rd Party Mount adapters are nothing but trouble. Use the Canon brand mount adapter. We hear all sorts of about 3rd Party Mount adapters causing problems. Such as causing the camera to lock up or drain batteries. 3rd Party lenses can do the same thing.

What has been strange, though, is that the battery indicator shows as full for 3 or 4 days then it's completely drained the next day. I'd have thought it would indicate 3/4 full, 1/2 full etc over the 5 days.

I can leave my battery in my camera for weeks before it’s completely dead. If I know I won’t be using it for a while I remove the battery. When I store my camera I also remove the memory cards and lens then put the body cap on. But usually I have to pull pictures off my camera so the memory will be removed anyway. If you have an extra fully charged battery put in the camera. Then remove the lens, mount adapter and other accessories. Then check the battery tomorrow and see if it’s completely drained again.

Please remove the viltrox adapter and lens. Check if you have Wireless turned on and if so disable it. I'll bet the battery in your current R50 stays charged now. If you're going to use a lens adapter, make sure it's Canon brand. To be brutally honest, it's time to time let that 15 yr old 18-270 go. Lenses this old lack the communication standards for mirrorless. I'm sorry you went through two R10s. They were probably fine. I'm surprise the retailer didn't investigate your issue more thoroughly. I'm confident once you take the adapter out of the equation you'll be in good shape.

Thanks Rick. Sadly, I cannot afford new lenses but I'll store the camera with no lenses or adapters attached when not being used.

I don't typically leave a battery in my camera for more than 2 or 3 days. However, I have on occasion left one in a week without any drop in battery percentage. We'll look forward to hearing back from you in a few days. 🙂

OK - update time! I left the battery in the camera with no lens or adapter attached and it retained full charge for seven days! Today I fired off 103 shots on burst to see if it affected the battery. All good! Stage two of my experiment is to leave the camera with just the adapter attached. If that drains the battery I'll know what to do next!
