Sorry to hear about your experience.

Do you have any accessories besides a lens attached to the camera?

What brand and model number lens are you using?

Does the issue arise with any lens?

Do you use the rear screen to take photos?

Is the battery fully charged?

Does the issue persist with no memory card installed?

I recommend removing the lens and blowing out the exposed mirror box with a rocket blower. Point the opening down so that dust and debris can fall out.

If the camera still doesn’t work properly, then you may need a repair or replacement.

Screen went black and the red-eye reduction/self-timer lamp stays lit until you turn the camera power off. I've tried a new battery, no change. I inserted a new SD card, no change. I am ready to purchase a new camera, but my daughter loves this camera and it's only a few years old. Please help!

What size SD Card are you using Full or Micro in an adapter. I would discontinue the use of Micro SD Cards in an adapter they’re known to cause problems. Also how many GB is the card. We’ve found that lineup of cameras doesn’t play nicely with 64GB or larger SD Cards. Using 16GB or 32GB the camera functioned correctly. It also didn’t hang or lock up either.

I'm pretty sure my daughter uses the larger SD card (she takes a lot of photos). We'll try that. Thanks! How do you feel about using a Wasabi replacement battery instead of a Canon battery?

I would stick with the OEM Canon battery. I’ve seen 3rd Party batteries work fine until you try burst shooting. Then the camera locks up on you because the battery doesn’t have enough amps to keep the shutter going for bursts shooting. The 3rd Party battery may have the right voltage but it doesn’t have the amps. I would also recommend using multiple smaller SD Cards. Not 1 big 128GB SD Card and then the card were to fail all of your pictures are gone. Using multiple smaller 16GB SD Cards will prevent you from loosing all of your pictures.
