Can you mark my answer above as a solution so others can find it.

Secondly you get the best quality sound by getting the mic physically close to the sound you want to record. If the sound source is 20 feet from the camera then it’s best to use a radio mic or long cable instead of a mic on camera. Fortunately stereo headphone extension cables often work as a cheap fix to allow you to get the mic closer to the sound source. You will see plenty of people who use a clip on radio mic on their shirt to put the mic closer to their mouth for better sound.

Hello! I have been having problems finding a microphone that is compatible with my canon EOS r10. I have the right 3.5 mm cable and have a battery powered microphone but when I try and adjust my audio settings, it says my microphone is not compatible. I have the tikysky shotgun mic from amazon.

When you connect an external mic to the camera, the only two settings that can be changed on the camera menu are:-

Sound recording - select auto, manual or disable

Rec. level - this is available if sound recording is set to manual

The other two settings, wind filter an audio noise reduction only apply when using the camera's built in mic, not for any external mic.

This is covered in this part of the manual

https://cam.start.canon/en/C006/manual/html/UG-05_Shooting-2_0070.html

Ah okay thank you! As a follow up question, why is the audio from the camera so bad? The reviews sported a good audio quality but the mic sounds the same as the regular audio on the camera. I was wondering if there was a common setting that I was missing or if I should just find another microphone.
