topic Cannot set Speedlite 430EX III-RT Flash Functions or Flash C.Fn on EOS R7 in EOS DSLR & Mirrorless Cameras

New EOS R7 camera. With Speedlite 430EX III-RT mounted and powered ON, I cannot set Flash Functions or Flash C.Fn from the menu screen. When I click on the menu item for either setting I get a camera message that tells me the flash is either off or not compatible. Does anyone here know what the issue is, and what the fix would be? This same flash unit works perfectly on my Canon EOS 90D.

Thanks.

How far are you sliding the speedlite in the hot shoe. If you slide it in too far you can get that message too or not far enough. I've used my old and new speedlites in the hot shoe of newer multi function hot shoe cameras and they work just fine.

I had already thought about the hotshoe contacts before posting. I checked and they seemed to be lining up. I also asked this question over on the Facebook Canon EOS R7 group, and got the following answer:

"Check if you are in mechanical shutter will not work in electronic shutter".

Sure enough, I was on electronic shutter. So I set it to mechanical shutter, and voila! Now I'm able to get into the 2 menus I was locked out of. I finished setting up my choices in those menus, and for giggles I went and set the camera back to electronic shutter, 1st curtain. Now, I can still access those menu items.

I have no clue why it wouldn't let me in those menus when I first tried, but it will now. Perhaps firmware glitch? I didn't see anything in the manual about having to be set to mechanical shutter to get into the flash functions settings, but I suppose I could've missed it. I just hope it doesn't happen again.

Thanks Demetrius.

Where did this information come from? I use the Canon 430 EX-RT III, the Canon ST-E3-RT, the Canon 600 EX-RT, Canon 600 EX RT II, and the Canon EL-5 on my Canon R7, Canon R5 MK II, and except for the Canon EL-5 on my Canon R5. I just shot a session. I just confirmed these items worked on my R7 and R5 MK II which both have the multifunction advanced shoe.

I will post a link to the correct compatibility and pics of a device it says won't work that I am using without the AD-E1. Note that I have an AD-E1 and it should be used if you need weatherproofing on the multi-function shoe. I apologize I don't have te 430 EX III-RT with me, but it works just like the ST-E3 and 600 EX-RT and 600 EX II-RT units.

List of Compatible Accessories - Canon R7, R5, R5 MK II and Others

Right from the manual for the R6 Mark II. All other R series cameras have this exact same page in the manual. Now I haven’t read the manual for the R5 Mark II yet. But I would assume it would have the same information listed as other R series cameras with the Digital Hot Shoe. Also note the EOS R7, EOS R3 & R10 ARE NOT FULLY COMPATIBLE with the Speedlite’s EL-5’s LED AF Assist Beam. The LED AF Assist Beam IS PROJECTED AT FULL BRIGHTNESS ONLY. Regardless of the ambient lighting conditions. If the ambient lighting is too low the AF Assist Beam AUTOMATICALLY switches to Intermittent Flash Firing. The camera body chooses the AF Assist Beam projection method of the speedlite. You cannot set that function. Newer cameras such as the R6 Mark II can adjust the brightness of the LED AF Assist Beam based on the ambient lighting. If the speedlite overheats the speedlite AUTOMATICALLY reduces brightness of the LED AF Assist Beam. Or SWITCHES TO Intermittent Flash Firing for SAFETY. Or the camera body will emit an LED AF Assist Beam. Older speedlites with an IR AF Assist Beam will AUTOMATICALLY switch to Intermittent Flash Firing regardless of the AF Assist Beam projection method set. The camera body overrides the setting AUTOMATICALLY for speedlites with a choice of IR or Intermittent Flash Firing.

Also the EOS R50 requires the AD-E1 adapter to use older style flashes. It is only compatible with new multi function hot shoe devices. It lacks the legacy 5 pins for those older flash units to work. So it’s mandatory that you use the adapter on that camera for older flash units they simply won’t fire.

Agree that the R50 needs the AD-E1 adapter to use older-style flashes. Without the classic 4 points of contacts none of the older accessories will work.
