Rising EOS R7 mechanical shutter failures?

An fyi for anyone on here that owns an R7 or is thinking of picking one up as a B/C/D-cam (as I am).

I joined an R7 group recently and there seems to be an ongoing issue with this model's mechanical shutter. The reports of MS failures in this one group alone is unlike anything I've seen/heard before. Particularly for a cam that's only been around for 2 years.

This is of course all anecdotal, but as someone who has exclusively bought used Canon cams for well over a decade (7D/5D MKII/MKIII/1DC/R5/R5C) and who has been a member of various groups/forums for these cams in that time, I have never seen this frequency of owners reporting mechanical shutter failures. And again, the cam isn't even 3 years old.

I find it hard to believe that Canon isn't already aware of this (given how many people in that forum have sent their cams in to be fixed) - but at the very least, anyone looking to pick up an R7 should: (i) be prepared to not use its mechanical shutter, (ii) be very wary of buying an R7 used and/or w/o an extended warranty that specifically covers the MS.

Also, if I was someone who had done a review/deep dive into this cam - I'd be looking into this potential issue further, and seriously considering updating those reviews/deep dives for the sake of my own brand integrity.

Its funny how Canon put some "users" in this forum for defending their equipment. Its EVERYWHERE on internet Canon R7 with problems in shutters in less then 1 year of use...

Yes that is prob true but it's likely bcuz the lion's share of Canon owners do not use these official Canon forums. The FB group I'm referring to has over 35K users! And that's a group JUST for R7 owners. Either way the owner reports are out there, and most importantly, it's not like people have a reason to lie en masse about their experience with this particular issue. Personally, I had joined that R7 group bcuz I was thinking of buying one as a C-Cam for my two R5Cs. But the frequency of MS failures I saw being posted about in that group was enough of a flag for me to stand down on buying one.

Maaaybe the sheer amount of R7 users in that particular group is making it seem like it's a bigger issue than it is - but I find it really hard to believe that a 3 year old cam would have MS failures like that... either way, I've done my good deed in passing it along and people can interpret this info as they please.

Where do you watch for R7 posts? On this particular forum? Bcuz it accounts for a small fraction of R7 users, much less overall Canon users. But either way, now you know that there are R7 specific groups outside of your present scope (with 30K+ members) that are actively discussing issues that could be helpful in your decision: https://www.facebook.com/share/g/12EyYtMGNW7/?mibextid=wwXIfr

I don't know if that's the case - but it's normal for people to express skepticism when presented with new information. Frustrating for those already aware - but it is what it is... I came across these reports very innocently and it took a month of seeing random people posting about it for me to realize it could be something bigger. Either way I just thought I'd post it here bcuz this forum really is pretty far removed from other groups on FB, etc.
