EOS R5 shows 512 GB CFexpress Card capacity as 59.4 GB

I just purchased an EOS R5 and updated the firmware to the latest 2.1. I purchased a Lexar Silver CFexpress card that is listed as compatible. The card is 512GB, but when I format it shows as 59.4 GB and camera estimates 954 photos (much too low). Canon format instructions say the GB listed may not be accurate, but that and the number of shots seem way off. I confirmed on a card reader the card is, in fact 512GB.

Is there a problem or is it safe to assume the camera will use the entire card and only the estimates are inaccurate? Thanks, Ray

There is an issue. If the card is reporting itself has 59.4 GB. this is all the camera will use.

Where did you buy the card and from whom?

Canon format instruction state the gigabyte listed may not be accurate? Where are you seeing this information? Are you formatting the card in camera?

It sounds like you may need a low-level format the card.

Yes, I did a full exFat format on my PC that recognizes it as 512 GB, so not a card problem.

Here is where I saw the information about the GB info not being accurate: Article Detail

"The card capacity displayed on the card format screen may be smaller than the capacity indicated on the card."

I bought the card on Amazon (from Amazon and not third party seller). My PC recognizes it as 512GB, so not a card issue. I also got a 128 GB version of same card and the same thing happens. I should probably contact Canon as it may be a hardware problem. I did a low level format and a format on my pc.

This means that the mfg lists the total number of bytes, while the formatted capacity shown is smaller since it lists *usable* storage, not counting housekeeping bytes. It should be off by 10% or so, not 1/3 the card!

Something is really wrong. These could be counterfeit cards, I seem to recall an issue like this which sticks in the back of my mind.

When I have 2 cards in my EOS R5, it reports the capacity as the smaller of the 2 cards. Did you also have an SD card in the camera at the same time?

I have my camera set to record to both cards, so this might make a difference.

I wanted to report back to clear up the mystery of the problem to provide a laugh and admit to egregious stupidity.

I was unaware of the fact that there was a 64 GB SD card in the second slot and that is the card that the formatting screen defaulted to. Once I switched to Card 1 the problem was solved!

Sorry to waste everyone's time with my stupidity. I can't believe that wasn't one of the first things that I checked. Too bad there is no red faced emoji.
