That's odd, because from what I've read, the Canon 250D also has a recording limit of 29 minutes and 59 seconds..

Hello, good afternoon

I'm setting up a podcast in Brazil and decided to use Canon.

I have 4 units of the 250D positioned on people's faces and 1 canon 90D positioned with table view.

The broadcast will be live, via BlackMagic Design (Television and OBS). All Canon's have the software updated.

The automatic shutdown of all Canon is disabled, however the Canon 90D continues to turn off on its own every 30 minutes.

That doesn't happen on the 250D.

Could you help me fix this on the 90D? She shouldn't hang up on her own.

Greetings fulviofarah,

The EOS 90D camera will have the sensor turn off after 29 minutes and 59 seconds when using the Live View shooting mode and when the camera is set to the video recording mode. This would also include when using the HDMI port to send a live signal from the camera to an external device. This occurs even if you have set the camera to not power off under the power saving feature. Pressing the shutter button halfway will turn the sensor turn back and you will be able to see through your display or external device again. Unfortunately, this function cannot be modified on the camera.

After trying to find a solution to this myself, I have landed here. Some facts to note about the 29:59 recording restriction on Canon DSLRs:

1. This was mainly caused by the EU who was taxing cameras and video equipment differently. Since the EU defined 30 minutes or longer record time classified it as 'video equipment' with a much higher tax, this limit was imposed to avoid that taxation for customers.

2. The EU abandoned this distinction in 2019 and it is now 2026 so for the limitation to remain, well, that's on the manufacturer now. No longer is the reasoning due to the EU's laws, but now is self-imposed by Canon and other manufacturers. That said, there is no longer a need to limit recording time.

3. Our Canon 'Product Expert' above said "Unfortunately, this function cannot be modified on the camera". While this is true, Canon could easily change this limitation in a firmware update just like they did when everyone complained about lack of support for 24p on the 90D. After a lot of backlash, Canon quickly released firmware months later addressing this. So, everyone is aware that it's possible for Canon to add features and functionality as long as the camera can support it.

So it's probably worth an effort to have masses petition Canon for this needed update, now that the EU is no longer classifying over 30 minutes record time as a device to be taxed differently!
