topic Eos R Firmware Update Error in EOS DSLR & Mirrorless Cameras

I need help updating firmware on an EOS R camera (just plain R), currently running version 1.4 and needing to update to 1.8. I downloaded the new firmware and copied it onto a newly formatted card, at the root directory. Following scrupulously all the Canon-provided directions, I keep running into the following error message: "Firmware update program. Update file cannot be found. Please check the memory card and reload the battery and try again." The card is fine, and the file is there. I have repeated all steps 5 times, verifying I've done things correctly each time.

If I can find a right-sized USB cable in my vast drawer of specialized cables, I can try to update the firmware using the EOS Utility.

However, can anyone give me advice on what's going wrong. Could it be that I can't go from 1.4 to 1.8, bypassing 1.6? I wouldn't be doing any update, frankly, except that I got a new lens that demands updated firmware.

Thank you!

UPDATE. I sleuthed even further into the history of my camera, purchased 5 years ago, and found that I'd purchased an RP, not an R. Duh. (The camera marking just says R). So I found the proper firmware, the latest version of which is 1.6 for the RP, and everything worked fine. I'm just sharing this to perhaps spare others in my situation. Be quadruply sure about your camera model.

I think it says RP right by the mode dial.

You're absolutely right. I was looking at the face of the camera, not the dial. I chastised myself with "Duh" in my reply, and now I see that I'm Double Duh. My first post may be my last. Happy New Year!
