Shooting stills in a studio, using EVF, I'm seeing the white thermometer icon showing up indicating that the camera is overheating. I know this can be a risk for video but for single shot stills?

Shooting at ISO100 so hoping that the IQ is not impacted. Camera is about a year old with <23,000 shots. I use electronic first curtain when shooting under strobes. The studio is warm but not so hot that I'd expect overheating to be an issue.

Is this a problem with the camera or expected?

Welcome!

Overheating seems to occur most often when users are capturing video. The camera overheats because the image sensor gets warm from being constantly “on”. The memory card slot can overheat because of the constant flow of data being written on a memory card.

How long are your sessions? How is the camera used between shots? Is the camera tethered?

I have not heard of a R3 overheating shooting stills in a studio setting (ever). This has to be one of the most "controlled" environments out there. Are you using some kind of crazy lighting, 3rd party power or strobes?

I was in Germany a few months ago and it was 86*. I took hundreds of pictures over the course of 5-6 hours, and was holding my camera much of the time will no ill effects.

I'd call Canon as Stephen suggests.

Heading to the studio now for another shoot, I'll see if/when the icon appears again. The room is too warm for my liking at 73* but it's not unbearable. Shooting tethered to a laptop with Capture One. Session is about 4 hours of shooting, covering around 500 images of high school sports portraits. Camera is constantly on and rarely away from my eye as the kids transition.

I would think the camera being on for a few hours should make it overheat.

Icon came on today after only 40 minutes of shooting and 125 shots. It impacts the amount of time that it takes to send the shot to the camera, can't comment for certain on IQ impact though. Trying to switch off between teams, if only for 20 or 30s.

Your tether could be what’s keeping the image sensor powered up, preventing the camera to become idle between shots. Just a guess.
