Viewfinder/LCD agreement in 90D

In cold weather (~32F, 0C), when I try to change the autofocus type (zone, point etc), the state posted on the LCD does not match that seen through the viewfinder. As a result, it’s not clear to me what autofocus method I’m shooting in. Had anyone else seen this problem? The camera is about 3-1/2 yrs old at this point.

Do you have the camera set up to show all AF Points regardless if they’re active or not.

I could be wrong, but I believe that the LCD and your viewfinder's focusing systems are different and act independently from each other. I know I have a T8i, and I can set up zone focusing in my viewfinder and single point on my LCD and vice versa.

Yes they are different systems that work. Live view uses the image sensor for AF. While the viewfinder uses AF sensors on the floor of the camera under the mirror. I know on my EOS 5D Mark IV i can use the LCD screen to show which viewfinder AF points are active and select the focus points. On my camera I have it set up to display all of the AF points regardless if they’re active or not. By default it will only show active AF points. A custom function can be changed for this to be done. Also I can set the camera up to allow the AF points to light up in red when Servo AF is being used.

My colleagues are correct. The OVF and LV use completely separate focusing systems. They are different from each other.

thanks for the replies. Here's what's happening, all using the viewfinder. I tap the button between the shutter button and aperture wheel (generally I shoot in Av). That brings up, in the viewfinder, all of the focus point options. Mostly I shoot single point focus, so at this point I'm usinghte joystick to select the focus point. On the LCD screen (not using live view), the focus mode (spot, single point, zone etc.) is shown. If I choose small zone (the particular case I experienced), I see the small zone selection in the viewfinder. When I verify on the LCD, it still showed single point. In fact just yesterday, I stayed on single point focus, selected one of the non-cross focal points at the right side of the selectable focal points, but when I was ready to shoot the focal point, seen in the viewfinder, hadn't moved. As the temperature warmed up, the problem went away.

Try that again. But this time do it in Live View mode.
